vivoactive 6 - constantly rebooting and sync problems

I have been having constant problems with my vivoactive 6 since receiving the watch a week ago, so far it has been a big disappointment.

The watch reboots at least 20 times a day if not more often, I think it mostly happens when the watch is trying to sync although I am not sure this is the case every time. Other things I notice is that steps are often lost during the day, and that the watch keeps reverting to energy saving settings I changed earlyer. Both point at syncing problems.

Things I have tried:

* the app on my Android 14 smartphone has no energy restrictions

* the watch has been marked as a safe device on my Android phone (as suggested by customer service)

* I have disabled all energy saving settings on the watch (although this is hard, since the watch keeps trying to reset this setting)

* I have applied a factory reset several times, and removed /reinstalled the connect app on my phone.

Thing that strikes me is that the watch is also often rebooting even when I switch off Bluetooth on my phone (so that sync wouldn't be the issue)

Is anyone using this watch with correct step counting, no syncing problems and no constant reboots?

  • Reading your description makes it seem like you have a defective device which should be replaced.

However, as others have mentioned in several forum threads, there is one issue reported by many users with this model:
The screen turning off occasionally, turning back on a few moments later (after ~10-60 sec). This happens while operating the touchscreen but also while in always-on passive mode (just looking at it). This must be a software issue, concluded by the many different bug reports. It's impossible to reproduce, but it happens multiple times throughout the day (I'm sure I don't notice every single display malfunction whatsoever). I'd like to get feedback from Garmin on this topic, but no response so far.

Make sure you actually have hardware issues before getting a replacement. Can you actually observe the boot animation?

  • yep, it's actually rebooting (blue triangle / boot animation). Also the watch looses hundreds of steps that were counted earlyer during these reboots.  I will opt for a replacement from the vendor.

  • Hi Tracy. The display still keeps going dark (seems powered-off) occasionally for some seconds multiple times per day.

It's not a major issue, but I'd love my watch to always display the time reliably. Are you able to confirm any software bugs? Or do you think it's a hardware failure - should I reach out to customer support and request a replacement? How to proceed getting this fixed? Thanks in advance, looking forward to your feedback.

  • Hello!

If you hit the top button (maybe twice) after the device goes dark, does the watch vibrate?

  • While in "screen-off" state the watch seems totally unresponsive to button press events or touchscreen gestures, as mentioned. But I appreciate your suggestion because in my configuration, the long press of the back button launches the Pay function. I was able to reproduce the long press reliably activates the screen out of the error state (although at very high brightness) while vibrating at the same time. After testing this observation for multiple days to give proper a response, it seems more like a software bug than a hardware issue. Let me know what you think. Really looking forward to more feedback on this topic.

Quick recap: Screen randomly turns off, doesn't turn on by touch, button or gestures. Long press back button to launch the Pay feature always works.

  • Sadly, I have the same issues as before. I thought it was maybe just when I had an activity going, since it mostly happened then, which some articles described t hat as a GPS issue. I have since synced the latest software and thought that this resolved it, however since then it has started again and just today it rebooted 3 times for me.

  • For me, all rebooting issues have been resolved after a hardware swap.
