Vivoactive 5: ski lift ascents recorded as runs (feature artificially disabled?)

Vivoactive 5 records ski lift ascents as runs, although all required data is clearly available:

– elevation (constant uphill)

– speed (low, stable)

– direction (linear)

As seen in this pictures below all necessary data is clearly recorder but there is a software limitation. Software could have easily distinguished between ascents and descents, while you can see in the second picture that ascents were recorded as runs.

This is not a sensor or data limitation.

On Vivoactive 5 this appears to be product segmentation rather than a technical constraint.

Request: enable basic lift detection or automatic pause for sustained uphill movement in Ski activities.

Anyone else seeing this?

  • Garmin customer support responded that the feature is not working because vivoactive 5 has no barometer and watch cannot precisely determine altitude. Common, what an excuse, GPS accuracy is clearly enough to determine whether you go up or down.

The going down, going up should be very simple algorithm as it is very clear from graph when you do that.

Look at the green spikes, is so simple.

The barometer excuse is just a cheap excuse of not implementing a simple piece of algorithm.

On top of that, ski app is sold and marketed by Garmin as being shipped with vivoactive 5.

So basically just Garmin saying that actually they don't support something you actually payed for, because ski app was marketed as being part of vivoactive 5.
