Vivoactive 5 skiing activity does not differentiate between skiing down and going upwards(in the Lift!)

Vivoactive 5 skiing activity does not differentiate between skiing down and going upwards(in the Lift!) It calculates all km no matter if up or down. Is this an software bug? In the app there is also a legend for "Laufen"(skiing) in red and "Lift" in grey but i can only see red lines on the card which makes no sense since I had to go up sometime in between...(which I did!)

Also you can push the button to stop the round. But the new one starts directly. When am I supposed to take the Lift in between? Also I find it very annoying to push any button after each run. What am I doing wrong? I can not believe this is supposed to work like this. Is it not possible that vivoactive counts the downhill runs automatically??

  • Garmin intentionally limits their watches. Vivoactive 5 will not receive any important new features/improvements. It is as it is and will remain so.

  • I got my viivo5 2 days ago for Christmas.

Had a vivo3 before and used it for everything. Running, cycling, skiing, training, etc....

I went skiing yesterday and discovered this flaw on the ski function. No run count and no stop between them?!!

I mean come on Garmin, this is a setback.

We need a fix and it's an easy one with the GPS.

So when can we expect a fix  or should I return my watch?

  • Garmin Confirmed that they are not going to fix this issue. Even when it was available with the Vivoactive 4 and it's not mentioned that the skiing activity is working differently from that one. I also asked if they can offer an upgrade to e.g. Venu3 but that's also not possible. Not sure if my next clock will be a Garmin again. "Andere Mütter haben auch hübsche Töchter"

  • I also a skiier and I try to write a script for converting the data (gpx). My wife also has a vivoactive 4 to check.

  • Still having this issue as of 01/26/25.  The vivoactive 5 is my first Garmin watch, so I can't compare it to previous models, but it is pretty disappointing that it can't detect it, especially since it makes it look like it can.  Even if I could retroactively highlight sections that are lifts so that it changes the workout stats, that would be cool.  It's also disappointing that this doesn't have an altimeter, but the previous model did.  Why take such a cool feature out of your new and improved model?
