Vivoactive 5 misses first 2 hours of slee

I wake up often in the night. I am 81 years old. I have had the Vivoactive 5 for about a week.

Last night I went to bed at 1:15 AM and woke up at 9:55 AM.
The Vivoactive 5 recorded me as being asleep from 3:32 AM to 9:54 AM with a sleep score of 55 (poor).

Is there a setting I can use to force the V5 to start recording sleep when I go to bed?

I went to bed at 1:15 AM, woke up briefly around 2:20 and got out of bed for less than 5 minutes.
The same thing happened around 3:30 and 6:00 and 7:30.

The Vivoactive 5 decided that my sleep started after returning to bed around 3:30 AM.

  • You are not alone in sleep sensing troubles. I got my Vivoactive 5 two days ago, I'm sixty, and I have some health stuff that leaves me with really fragmented sleep. The system decided to join two sleep periods with 2:20 of wakefulness between them, and then missed about two hours of additional sleep. I used to have a Fitbit Charge5 and it would handle the sleep issue, but it died in its sleep a week ago and a friend who also has a Garmin product urged me to get this one.

  • I switched from a Fitbit Versa2 to the Garmin Vivoactive 5.
The Vivoactive 5 is slowly getting better at automatically detecting sleep than the Fitbit. But, the Fitbit app would let me edit the sleep start & end times.

I gave up on the Fitbit after using it for many years because they insist on a subscription fee to see advanced statistics.xc

I have discovered that it is possible to edit the sleep start time in either the Garmin Connect app or the website https://connect.garmin.com/modern

The exact icon to edit is slightly different in those 2 locations.

Here it is on the website.
When I switched stat time to 2:18, my sleep score went from 51 to 60.

  • That is interesting news, but my sleep is as described - crazy irregular. I don't have a bed time/morning alarm routine, can not stick to such things, so I just do what my body wants. I have a virtual personal trainer who is an absolute tyrant, but she has occasional moments of startling sweetness - such as just Paypal me $150 so I can return this one and get a Vivoactive. We'll see if that does any better.

  • It turns out that I can edit the sleep start and end times for my Vivoactive 5, but it only shows Light Sleep in the extended times and no rem or deep sleep. This improves the sleep score but is not really accurate. Still it is more accurate than not correcting the Garmin automatically detected times.
