As vivoactive 5 is now AMOLED should we expect to see more devices switching to that screen type? Will there ever be a more health and wellness watch with a transflective display like the old vivoactives again?

I can see the appeal for brighter more bold screens and garmin does them well it seems but I’m sure a fair amount of us quite like a transflective screen no? There’s no threat of burn in, less battery consumption, it has a nice retro look to it, will there still be options for us (aside from the instinct which while nice is quite rugged)?

Apologies if this is the incorrect place to post this but I wasn’t sure where specifically to put this.

  • I have to agree, I much prefer the transflective display as it can be easily seen during the day without having to turn some backlight.
I also like the "Simplicity" of the look of the transflective display.

I would have hoped that the Vivoactive 5 would have had a transflective display as well as some Solar charging built-in the bezel, but alas it seems that Garmin is just listening to the Buzz generated by other companies, and not what their customers are actually asking for.

For now I am going to stay with my trusty Vivoactive 4 that has 8 days of battery life, with an always on Display.

  • This is a major bummer to anyone who has been eagerly waiting over four years for a MIP version of the Venu 2/3. Instead of getting that with Vivoactive 5, they're getting an amoled Venu 3 "lite"... probably not what most people had in mind for the VA5.

While I myself have made the switch to amoled with the recent Epix Pro 51mm, I'll be sad if Garmin is phasing out the MIP screens, in my opinion they are still very relevant and will continue to be for a very long time.

  • The problem (IMO) is that MIP screens were seen as old, uncool and unimpressive even 10 years ago. (A waitress at a bar saw my Garmin and remarked “it doesn’t look real”.) Over the years I’ve seen countless complaints about how Garmin screens look bad, or how Connect IQ watchfaces don’t look as good as the screenshots.

Now that Garmin has solved the biggest problem (for them) associated with OLED displays (battery drain), they’re probably not going to reverse course.

Maybe one day in the far future, smartwatches will use MicroLED or something even better which is able to stay at full brightness for hours without issues like burn-in and excessive battery drain. Even then, it wouldn’t be the same as a reflective display but it seems nobody wants that in any product except for e-readers. E-readers are probably a tiny niche compared to ipads tho.

    I personally like MIP because:

    - I like truly “always on” watchfaces which can constantly update seconds and other data like HR (even though it doesn’t matter)

    - I like being able to glance at my watch during a hard workout in daylight without doing a deliberate wrist turn / button press and waiting for the display to light up. (Of course when I run at night I have the exact same problem that OLED watch users would have, but I rarely do hard workouts at night)

But Garmin isn’t going to sell watches on that basis, since Apple Watch is marketed as “always on” (even though the display dims and displays less information after a few seconds), and ppl seem to be happy with it. (I love Apple Watch as a smartwatch tbh)

  • It is exactly the other way around. The Amoled looks artificial when on and like dead when off. They are not good in sunlight, but they are even terrible when weared with display off and looks like washing machine on your writst - terrible look. Always on display on Amoled is gimmick as it is neither visible, but it still kills your battery regardless.
OLED is great technology for specific purposes, for example TV and smartphone. It is not however good for laptop or smartwatch. Just the same like the waitress in the bar - she might be good choice for bed purposes, but certainly does not understand anything from watches. Casio are selling hundreds of thousands watches every year because translective is not good looking. I would not pay much attention to her statement. The fact that she made remark, shows that your watch was eye catching.

I am happy that Garmin decided to keep both MIP and Amoled for Fenix series (Epix) and reply to both demands. I am very happy with my Fenix 7 Pro and I would not make a purchase if it was not with MIP display. I feel sorry that they have not done the same and give you choice with the other series as vivo which you are interested guys.
