Vivoactive 4S heartt rate or me? Drops during walks on run intervals

I got this reading during run / walk intervals a couple of days ago.

I have a GP appointment to discuss this in case it is me!  I felt vertigo on the cooldown walk but nothing beyond expected exertion throughout.

The low heart rate spells (appear to be <70) on the walk breaks don't look feasible though? Pace is blue, heart rate red in the graph.

Has anyone else noticed this? For context this was my first run after a couple of months and it was intervals - 1 min 30 seconds run with 1 min walk x 10, plus a warm up and cooldown walk either side.

  • Hi, I've just posted a very similar query. Did you ever get to the bottom of it?  Thanks

  • No, I didn't really and Garmin certainly never replied. I think it's the watch though. I found an old Garmin and started wearing one on each wrist when running. The old Garmin does not display the massive drops that the Vivoactive 4S does. So I think it's a fault with the 4S, which I had had for around 3 years. Disappointing that the old watch is more accurate though.

In the end I also thought if my heart rate was actually plummeting from 160 bpm to <60 bpm during g my walking intervals I'd surely know about it! I don't have symptoms so, together with the above test with my old watch, I think it's the watch.

What I should do now is another matter. I'd like a new Garmin but not if it's going to perpetuate this problem!

I'd be interested to hear if you figure anything out.

  • Thank you for the reply! I think I'm going to work through certain things like wearing it on the other wrist, new strap, and then go through the resets... Partial to defaults then full with data clear and see if I find a way around it. Since it's started happening I've done a treadmill run at a steady pace and nothing dropped, then on the runs where it's happened I've overlayed pace onto HR like you did and it absolutely happens mainly at a slow down in pace.

I will definitely let you know if I find out anything further.

    Thanks

  • Have you tried a factory reset? I did the same and it seems to have resolved the issue Fingers crossedFingers crossed

  • Hello, thanks for the update! No, I've not tried that yet. Did you have to do the reset with data clear, or just the reset of settings? I really don't want to do the data clear one!

  • I did the data clear one... Which I didn't want to do either. But a lot of things seemed to have been saved via Garmin Connect and it didn't take that long to set it back up at all. Longest thing was synching some Spotify songs back on.

  • Thanks! Is your fix still working? Did the data clear lose all your activities and badges, or were those still saved on the Garmin Connect app?

Thanks again for your advice on this.

  • Five runs in and it is still working (one of the runs was a 16 rep interval workout so a good test).

All my activities are still safely on Garmin connect and still accessible even after a data resetThumbsup In terms of badges, I never really paid much attention to them so I'm not sure where to find them on the watch or the connect sorry. But if badges are seeing your fastest 5k, longest runs etc then yes that is still there on Connect.

Good luck with it and please let me know if it works for you as well. I did buy a new watch strap at the same time but I'm sure it was the reset that fixed it.
