I swam 1.6km today in a lake but it recorded 10.4km with pool swim. What is going on?

I have a vivoactive4 and went for a 1600m swim in a lake this morning but the watch (pool swim was the only option) recorded 10,4km! What's happening?

Pool swim mode is not suitable for open water swimming. It uses a special method for distance calculation, which cannot work properly in open waters.

Got it. So is Vivoactive4 completely useless for open water swims?

Well, you could put it under your swimming cap and start some other gps-enabled activity, and then change its type to open water swimming in garmin connect.
