Anyone having good luck programming VA4 Strength workouts with rounds and steps??

I have a couple of custom strength workouts that I created a couple of years ago.  This week I wanted to add a new workout, focussing on a different body area.  I deleted a couple of old workouts I don't use, then began creating a 2 round workout with lunges, flys, shoulder press, and rests between exercises.  Saved the workout, sent to my VA4, but when I go to try to run the workout, I've got a half dozen rest periods, followed by a couple of strength exercises in a row.  This doesn't work for me.  Now, i can write on paper the workout I want to do, and the watch can record reps and sets okay, I know this because I have recently done that.  But that's not what I want to do.  I want my VA4 to prompt me with the exercises and let me take rests between them, and I want to do more than one round each time I work out.

Why is the VA4 not behaving?

  • Did you create the workout in the Garmin Connect app or on Garmin Connect Web? How does it look in the app? Should look something like this with rounds that contain one set and one rest.

  • Thanks for asking!  I design the workout to look like your examples (though my web display doesn't show color bars, just b/w).  I click on  "Save" and when it's done it has lumped a number of the "Rest" steps together.  What I wanted was two rounds that each include 3 or 4 different exercises, with rest periods interspersed between them.  That worked for me at one point in the past - I still have one of those workouts in my choices.  It no longer works, apparently?

Following this, I do see what you mean. After saving, all of the rest steps for the 2nd round are grouped together at the end of the round.

So, it goes from this with the rest steps in between each exercise.

Then clicking "Save Workout," goes to this, with all of the rest steps grouped at the bottom of the round.

I noticed that on Garmin Connect Web, when editing a workout and trying to reorder the steps by dragging them, it will cause the issue. If you go back and edit the round, do not try to drag the rest steps to the desired position, just change the workout steps to rest step, and the rest steps to a workout. I was able to save a workout successfully doing it this way.

I was able to go from this...

    to this...

  • Thanks, very much!  I will quit dragging, then.  You have really been a big help for me and my workouts!
