Watch not starting activity automatically when using an app on phone

I walk my dog twice a day and the watch (vivoactive 4s) picks up the walks automatically. I have just started using the NHS Couch to 5K app on my phone (don't get on with it on the watch) and the 1st 5 minutes is walking, yet for some reason the watch does not pick it up. I have never had a consistent issue with the watch not picking up runs or walks just seems strange that it has started to do this. I have done the same route with my dog in between times and it automatically connects so not a GPS "blackspot". Any one else had similar issue?
