What is a usual life expectancy of Vivoactive watches?

Hi, I have the watch for 2.5 years, today the HR sensor stopped working - reset didn't help. I am afraid it's the end. I wonder what is a usual longevity of these watches as this seems to be very short life. I'd had Fitbit Charge 2 before and those are still functioning, my sister have been usig them after me and they are about 5 years old.

  • I have the same thoughts as carrera4s. My lokal support told me they'll not help me with my vivoactive. They can only sell me the same model. I asked then for a special price for fenix 6s pro which is better for water activities. They told me it's impossible. I've never experienced such a bad company support!

  • Hi Ania,

almost everything electronic nowadays has expiry date due to companies and stock holders policies. They demand constantly to have increased sells and earnings and unfortunately for the customers this is the way they the get it. Needless to mention that numerous complaints have been made for faulty products and issues (in every technological sector) just after the warranty expires.

Bye bye for me and never again anything digital, electronic etc that either demands maintenance and or/and it's made to "die" after a specific period.

  • Hi Carrera4S,

It's more a matter of intrinsic nature of electronic products and their development, rather than any policies. However, there is still an option to buy a mechanical watch and step counter ;-).

  • There's a point here but you can easily realize that the older something you already got, the longer it will last (car, AC, fridge, washing machine, laptop etc etc). I was mentioning in almost every digital and electronic product though.

Of course there is the option you say since every update causes an other issue and generally speaking the watch's algorithm counts whatever wants, whenever wants in some metrics.

  • Mine died less than 18 months.  took it for a brief swim in a shallow pool and that was the end of it.  Best I can get now is a flashing hollow blue triangle.  Totally unacceptable for a watch that claims to be waterproof!!!

  • I started out with a fitbit charge 2 when i started running spring of 2020. It wasn't long before i realized they were junk in comparison to garmin. I've had my vivoactive 4 for about 2.5 yrs now. Started running and battery life was great at first. Nothing too crazy 5 or 6 runs a week and between 5 to 21km a run. This season, it hasn't performed well during marathon training. Rarely ever used the music but I have been all the other features.  With a normal work day and 1 x 13km trail run, no music, my battery life was down from 100% to 15%. Functionality is great but poor battery life within a short span.

  • In my experience, products last longer now - a 10 year old car 40 years ago was pretty worn while a current 10 year old car is fine. Same with electronics, generally - a commercial grade 5 year old laptop is fine although slower than a new one. I believe almost everything, especially appliances, works a lot better and more efficiently than they did decades ago.

  • I have the opposite view. 30 years ago, I bought 15 year old cars, and they were fine for many years for me. A 15 year old car is a lot more outdated now. Same with phones. The old Nokias are still working, while a five year old phone now is totally obsolete, and can not get new software to keep it working.

  • A 15 year old car is more "outdated?" That's not a problem with the 15 year old car - it simply means the state of the art is progressing at a faster pace than before and you like the improvements. And the old phone *should* work with old software, but agreed, it would be much better and more ecologically sound if Android phones were supported longer like iPhones, Macs, or PCs.

  • A typical example is my 1979 Volvo 244DL, which didn't have any electronics. It would work like new for 20 years if maintained. A 10 year old car today will typically have features based on 3G, which is now discontinued, which means things will stop working, even if the car is maintained. Same with older Garmin watches. Garmin Express will no longer talk to them.
