I have been fighting with a WiFi problem for over a month now. Sometimes I could connect the VA4 and transfer without a problem, most times it would fail and hang on the square Garmin symbol and I'd have to restart the watch.
2 weeks ago I decided to look at the dual-band router. I've had this router for about 2 years, no changes, and the watch never had any problems connecting WiFi.
This router seems to switch from 2.4ghz to 5ghz when the traffic is high. Like when my kids are playing online games on the PS4, Wii, etc.
I changed the SSID on the 5ghz to another name, and the problem went away. But that is not a good solution for the gamers here, and since they need the speed I changed it back to the way it was. Of course I could have changed all their settings to the new 5ghz SSID, but I did not want to do that.
I had an older dual-band router that I set up as a sub-net off the main router. This of course has a different SSID, and I disabled 5ghz on it so only 2.4ghz is active. Then connected the watch to this router and removed the main router ID from the watch.
And since Monday I've had no problems.
So my question is, will Garmin ever get up-to-date on the WiFi software to allow 5ghz? Or is this fix going to be a "feature" for only new watches?
Funny how features that were working on my watch are slowly being de-featured by Garmin's sloppy updates.
If the problem comes back, I will update this tread. But, so far, so good.
