Does the lock screen blocks most of the screen and prevent reading the clock?

I saw old posts (3 years ago) on the annoying big lock icon in the middle of the screen that prevent reading the clock.

I am thinking on buying the VA4 but only if this issue was fixed and touching the clock will not show me a big annoying lock icon.

Can anyone that has the VA4 tell me if it is still an issue?

  • VA4 has always-on low-energy display (not oled like in venu series). Yes, lock icon shows when you touch the screen but you do not need to touch the screen to see the clock. The watchface is shown all the time. If you need light, the icon is shown only a few seconds and after it disappear you can see time as usual.

  • Thank you very much.

I am sorry to hear that GARMIN hasn't fixed that issue since it is a major flaw in the UX of their watches.

I currently have the VA3 and suffer from the same problems.

Although the AOD is very nice, I can't read the watch when it is dark. I also don't want to increase the brightness so it want bother me when sleep or waste to much battery.

And you are correct that the icon is shown only for 2-3 seconds, but those are the most frustrating seconds while I have a fast pace run.

  • I have used the VA4S for several years, and I have never locked it.

  • I must confirm this as being extremely annoying. I tried to use the lock screen as the watch constantly evaluates any contact with everything (water, blanket, sweater) as a finger gesture and turns the light on or changes the screen to some widget. When the lock is on, whenever I tried to check the time I saw only a huge padlock as it obviously just touched something again right before.. I really don’t understand the person who invented this lock behaviour – he probably never swim or wear a watch. Me as a user I know I locked my watch and if I need to I will unlock it manually. There is no need to inform me the whole time with fullscreen padlock my watch is locked and thus blocking the information about time – the main reason I wear a watch.

  • The problem is still there with the latest 7.20 sw.

I upgraded my watch from VA3 to VA4 ( as the VA3 started dhow signs of old battery )

In the VA3 the lock screen Padlock icon only masked what was behind itself ( not the whole screen !!)

I think that if it possible to have it like that with VA3 series, it should be a small thing to do with the VA4 also.

Hello Garmin Support / Software development

Please, Fix the above small but very annoying feature !!

  • I agree.
I never have even thought I needed to lock the watch, so never bothered.
Several friends have a VA4 also and don't lock the watch either.

Under what conditions would you need to have it locked all the time to the point of being annoyed all the time?

  • I like to have the autolock feature enabled, because of the false wipes ( caused by jacket sleeve, grand children playing with the watch, having a shower wearing it  etc..)

However, I have now noticed that if I only quickly want to see the time in the dark without unlocking the watch ; i have options:

    - if i am standing i should swing my arm from down to watching position and the watch should automatically turn on the back light

    - if I am in horizontal position ( in bed etc. ) the swing doesn't work.  Then tapping ( not swiping ) the screen will turn on the light.

Swiping the screen initiates the full screen padlock ..

I can live with the padlock screen feature now when I understand the above options.

But still, my opinion is that the full screen masking is unnecessary
