Vivoactive 4 stuck on wait for GPS

As I have seen in several other threads (that seem to be closed) my watch is not able to get past 'wait for GPS'. It takes ages to get to fully red, and then doesnt move from there to the activity.

  • I have been outdoors with it like this - even went for a run and it didn't progress
  • I have placed it on a windowsill for 20 mins
  • I have pressed the power button for 45 seconds

Has anyone worked out how to fix this yet?

Is this just how it's designed? There's no 'go' button or count down, just a red bar that says wait for GPS - and then you run? Terrible UX if so.

This is my first Garmin watch and am super disappointed by this experience. I have had smart watches before - they were connected to Google fit via my phone. Never once had a GPS problem.

  • It is supposed to switch to green when GPS is ready. If you are in the same area as last time you used GPS, it goes rather quickly to green.
My watch says GPS version 5.4, and current CPE info: Current.

  • It worked! I got the next screen with the green indicator in the top right.

My only next thing to try would have been to switch to one of the other GPS settings - one of them is apparently better for urban areas, the other better for wilderness.

    Thanks for the reply ovekvam
