Strength training user-altered weight not saving in app

Recently, when I have done a strength activity (weight training at the gym), I edit the number of reps and weight after each set on the watch, and then when I go to review the activity in the Garmin Connect app after the workout, the weights all say "body", so I need to try and remember what I did to edit the activity again.

This never used to happen, as it used to save the weights, so I at most only had to edit the exercise, but not I have to edit the exercise and the weight. (It always has the right amount of reps...)

  • Hello all!  Thank you for your participation in this forum thread.  So that I may assist you further, please reply with the following:

    1. May we, if necessary, have permission to email you?
    2. May we, if necessary, have permission to view/access your Garmin Connect account?
    3. In what country do you live?
    4. What model phone are you using with the Garmin Connect mobile app?
    5. Do the correct weights/reps show up correctly in the web version of Garmin Connect?
  • 1. Yes.

    2. Yes.

    3. Sweden.

    4. Samsung Galaxy S20.

    5. Will need to do a new activity and look at the web version first to verify.

  • 1. Yes

    2. Yes, ready to help debug the problem

    3. Czech Republic

    5. Actually I use the web version of Garmin Connect to make any necessary post-exercise adjustments to the recorded activity, like choosing the correct exercise that was not detected properly. So the described behavior of weight getting lost for some of the exercises is observed in the web app. It has happened twice in a row, have not observed it in the previous year of use. It's actually not all exercises that would be recorded as bodyweight-only when in fact I have duly entered the weight via the watch during exercise. From my observation, it probably depends on the type of exercise. If I do push-ups with a weight vest, and add 15 kg value knowing that I will need to later edit the exercise via the web app to change it into weighted push-ups, the value of 15 kg is lost. For some other exercises, I assume where the detection algorithm makes a guess on a type of exercise where some weight is typically expected to be used, let's say cable row, the weight I had entered via the watch is preserved and displayed properly in the web version of Garmin Connect.

  • I do not see a vivoactive 4 series watch registered to the Garmin Connect account associated with the email address that you're using for forums.

  • It's technically a Legacy Hero watch, but in essence it's a VA4, hence posting here.

  • Thank you .  I see that, thank you.  Over the last 4 days (since your last post), have you recorded a new activity and looked in Garmin Connect Web to verify?

  • Just recorded a strength session. I see that the weights and reps are correct, on both the app and website. (This wasn't the case last time, but now the exercises are totally wrong.)

However, now when I go to give them the correct exercise, that is when the weight is deleted. So if I change the 40 kg "sit-up" to "squat", it deletes the weight. But then if I add the weight, it changes the exercise to "weighted squat".

Last time (and the last few times I had the problem), it automatically detected moves as, for example, "squat", despite me adding the weight at the end of the set in the watch, so never made them "weighted squats" when it synced.

Why can't "squat" be with weights if needed. It is too complicated to scroll for the right exercises and some classic ones, Romanian Deadlift, for example, didn't exist in the list until recently.

  • when you go to give them the correct exercise, are you doing so in GC Web or the mobile app?  If in the mobile app, Android or Apple?

  • Tested in both the mobile app (Android) and on the website. As said, "squat" defaults to "bodyweight" if you select it. But it was automatically detected for me in workouts where I added the weight in the watch at the end of the set too.

Feels like it would be the easiest fix to allow all exercises to accept weights, rather than forcing you to select "weighted squat" or "weighted back squat" or "weighted barbell back squat" or all the other similar variations of the same move.

(To me at least, back squats are squats, front squats are front squats. All variations of barbell or dumbbell are irrelevant for what I want to record in my training data.)
