V02 reading

I’ve just discovered the V02 max setting on my vivoactive 4s. My reading is 31 which tells me I am at the bottom 50% of my age and gender and that my fitness age is 47. I am actually 59. I have checked to make sure that my DOB is correct in the settings.
Is the reading wrong or are there some very fit people out there?

  • Usually the VO2max readings from Garmin are not far off, but the tables for comparison can be strange. Check some other tables on internet to see if they agree with how your reading compares to the population. You can also do a 12 minute run (Cooper test) to check your fitness level.

  • As the comparison is to other Garmin users: Yes! Of course they are very fit. Theyre wearing garmin for sports Slight smile

  • I think the VO2 tables are supposed to be a comparison to the entire population.

  • JoyJoy  I see what you mean but I’m also wearing one!  I was just surprised that a minus 12 years was in the bottom. 50%. Just looks like I’ll have to wallow in middle age or work an awful lot harderGrin  

  • Hi Ovekam, I can see from previous posts that you are a runner and I wondered what your experience is comparing a Coopers Test with you VO2 max score on your Garmin. I am 56 and have recently started running again after a few years of absence and my VO2 max according to the Garmin is 45 however when I ran the 12 mins (on a treadmill as it is pouring with rain outside) I completed 2.05kms which is what I expected as I have always been a slowish runner and this gives me a score of 34.52 which is a long way off 45. To get to 45 I would need to run about 2.53km in the 12 mins.

    I have previously done the rockport 1 mile test and the VO2 max result there was almost the same as the Garmin.

  • I am 50 years old, and this summer I did 3200 meters on the Cooper test when I had something like 53 indicated as VO2max. If I had done a test on a bicycle, I would surely have scored lower compared to the population, since my fast twitch muscle fibers are more suited to running. If you are a slow runner, it makes sense to use the Rockport test instead.

  • Thanks for that I definitely have slow twitch muscle fibres. I had (and hopefully won’t have again) much issue running long distances in the past. 

  • Thank you for all taking the time to answer. The most obvious being that comparison to Garmin users and the general population are going to be different  - I just didn’t think it through !!
