My step count reduces overnight - when I go to bed the step count is correct on my device and the connect app. The next day on the app the "Yesterday" step count has reduced by about 1000 steps??

Step Count

  • Could it be a time zone issue? I have noticed that I sometimes lose some steps when moving between time zones.

  • I have this too! Getting really fed up now.  Yesterday I did 10,327 steps. Synced before bed. Today in my garmin calendar is says I did 9,540.

Still in the same time zone, never going to get another 10k a day streak! Starting to loose the love.....

  • I just experienced this for the first time, lost 3,000 steps overnight. Time zone not the issue as I was at home. Was an answer ever given as to the cause?

  • I have had it happen a couple of times without timezones involved too. I usually sync by wifi, and then there are no issues. But if I want to charge the watch, and sync by Express while charging from the laptop with USB, it can happen. I think it is a smart to do a sync by wifi or bluetooth before connecting to Express.

  • Hi, I've been on with Garmin about, done screenshots, sync via app and Express. Even had a new device but it still happens?

I did notice the other day that the step count on the "My Day" and calendar parts of the app were showing different figures? Don't know if the issue is there?

  • Sounds like you are on to something. I still think the most likely cause of the problem could be time zone related, as it affects when the count is saved and reset to zero. If two different softwares do not agree on this time, the issue can occur. Here we have Express, the Connect desktop app, the Connect phone app (even different parts of it) and the watch itself. If the setting differs, or one module is programmed wrong related to the time zone setting, we have a problem.

  • Since I've never left the UK since I got my gadget #covid #lockdown I'm not sure how this could happen? Or even how different parts of the app could be in different timezones?

Once day I lost over 10k steps (we'd done nearly 30k around London) and they didn't appear on a day either side?

They just disappeared? (this was one that Garmin looked at but had no answers?)

  • If the watch is showing time as 07:55, you can not know if it is 05:55+2 or 06:55+1. The time zone is usually hidden. It also seems to me like different devices use different sources to figure out the time zone. The PC could be using either the PC system time, or the Connect settings at https://connect.garmin.com/modern/settings/displayPreferences
These will affect the watch if you sync by Express.

The phone app seems to get the time from whatever phone network you are currently on. They can also have wrong time zone. This will affect the watch if you sync by bluetooth.

The watch itself seems to get the timezone from GPS if you do an outdoor activity.

If any of these systems do not have the same time zone, you can lose steps when the date ticks over.

  • Update on my previous comment. My step count corrected itself later that same day. This was the only time it happened, at least that I noticed it. I'll be paying closer attention to it now.
