turn off notifications when the watch is not worn

You could turn off watch when not using it.

Lay it on a pad so it doesn't "rattle".

I know, but I don't want turn off it every time when I put it down for a few hours. 
It can be automated,

Also will be grate screen turns off (like Google watch) not dimming and on when you racing hand to look at it

You could go to Controls and turn on DND.

DND has nothing to do with it

DND not turning screen off, plus you not going receive any notification

DND will stop all notifications and thus the rattling.  Since the the issue was the watch vibrating with notifications while not being worn and sitting on a table, there's no problem with stopping all notifications.

The advantage with the display type used by the Vivoactive series (unlike Samsung and Venu), is that it can always be on, and still use very little power.
