Heart Rate Jump of approx. 35 ppm in every activity

I am using my Vivoactive 4 and the Garmin HRM Run to measure the heart frequency.

While running activities, I see sudden heart rate jumps of approx. 35 ppm while keeping the same pace and load. This jump happens after 20 - 60 minutes within the activitc. Because of this, I had myself checked by a doctor (24-hour ECG, performance ECG, heart ultrasound ...), but everything was unobtrusive.

Can someone explain this behavior or deals/ has dealt with a similar issue on a vivoactive watch?

Advices are gladly welcome!

  • I think what you see there, is that the heart beat algorithm homes in on your running cadence instead of your heart beat. It happens sometimes for me too. I have seen it with a heart rate belt, but it is more common when using the wrist sensor.

Have you tried to simultaneously log the data on your phone from HRM using Wahoo app or something similar? Of course this would work only if your phone is ANT+ compatible as if I remember well HRM Run doesn't support bluetooth.

  • Thanks for your reply! This matches with the observation a few weeks ago that this was not happening during a run with an increased speed.

How do you handle/overcome this issue?

  • To get rid of the issue, the heart signal frequency must be stronger than the cadence frequency. A good fitment of the belt and wet sensor areas helps.
