Why does elevation change so dramatically on this running track?

I did a two mile run followed by intervals of walking and running on the local running track, which meets al U.S. standards for dimension, grade, etc. After the two mile portion of the activity, the elevation dropped by approximately 60 ft. The watch software is 5.80, GPS version 4.80, TSC version 2.00, Sensor version 9.01, BMX version 2.0.4. I was credited with an elevation gain of 249 ft on an essentially flat track.
