HIIT workout on a Garmin Venu or Vivoactive 4s

Hi! Is there a simple way to add a HIIT workout if you have different combinations of workout, rest periods, so that it is not a perfect circuit that is repeating? ie sometimes I will follow a workout that is 40 seconds on, 20 seconds off, other times it is 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off, and so it is not exactly consistent. I am wondering if there is a simpler way to add a custom workout of HIIT to your activities rather than programming in a play by play of each exercise?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thank you!

  • Hello .  Unfortunately, for a workout that changes interval/step times as much as it sounds like your does, your best way to manage this on the watch is just to program the workout with individual steps instead of using the "repeat" feature in the workout builder.  When you are building these workouts and NOT using the repeats, the # of steps (workout, recover, rest) that you use will be higher, but you can change the length/time of each individual step.

How Do I Create Workouts for My Device in Garmin Connect?

  • hi can Garmin please consider adding HIIT to their training, I've just bought my VA4 a month ago and then new Venu comes which supports HIIT out of the box. Right now I have to use cardio for tacking which is ok for me but I just want it to have own color and name right away without necessity to edit.

Can you please add my vote for such a request?

  • happy to do that for you!  I can not guarantee any changes will be implemented, however, we do hear you and care very much about your feedback so I have just submitted that feature request for you.  From what I am reading here, the timing intervals you described above would still require the workout creation I described above as it sounds like you are saying you will be doing both 40:20 second and 20:10 second rounds within the same activity, and that type of variable timing would not be covered under any of the HIIT timer options (AMRAP, EMOM, and Tabata).  Even if using the 'Custom' HIIT timer option, you could only choose one timer per workout.

  • Thank you , I'm intersting with the regular HIIT or Tabata, you've confused me with the topic starter Slight smile I just thought to ask in the same topic since we've already got your attention Slight smile so the way it's done on VENU 2 sounds good to me

  • I sure did, didn't I?  My apologies.  Glad I have all of the info out here for all to read though. Slight smile

  • Hi! Why can't I manually create a HIIT workout on the Connect app and then download it on Garmin Venu? It says the Venu is  "not a compatible device" to send my own HIIT workout to the watch, and I read that you can make your own HIIT workout (ie 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off...40 seconds on, 20 seconds on) manually and I want to be able to do a HIIT workout. I saw online that "if you want to send a pre-set workout to the Venu watch with animations, that is compatible" but I thought I could make my own HIIT workout with my own interval durations. "Find a workout'" is compatible but "Create a workout" is apparently not?

    Thanks!

  • Because the Vivoactive 4 and Venu watches do not support the HIIT activity profile, a HIIT workout will not be compatible.  You would need to choose a compatible workout type like "Strength" or "Cardio".  These workouts will only be available for use in their respective activity profiles.  For example, a "Strength" workout will not work on your "Cardio" activity profile.

  • 1. Gotcha, what if a HIIT workout is a mix of a strength/cardio/and core workout (no weights)? What activity would you pick then?

    2. And what Garmin watches are compatible with making your own HIIT workout with intervals and adding it to the watch?

    3. Does the Venu watch have any option for interval workouts?

  • To this same thread, a few weeks ago you answered my question about HIIT workout and stated:

Hello .  Unfortunately, for a workout that changes interval/step times as much as it sounds like your does, your best way to manage this on the watch is just to program the workout with individual steps instead of using the "repeat" feature in the workout builder.  When you are building these workouts and NOT using the repeats, the # of steps (workout, recover, rest) that you use will be higher, but you can change the length/time of each individual step”

So doesn’t that mean the Garmin Venu is compatible with creating your own interval workout vs what you just said about only being able to use the strength or cardio activity as an option?

  • Hello .  See below for answers to your questions:

    1.  I would recommend using the Cardio workout type and activity profile.  You will see a great number or movements/exercises to choose from when building the workout in Garmin Connect.

    2.  Currently, the Venu 2 is the only watch that features the HIIT activity profile and the ability to perform an HIIT workout.

    3. The Venu watch does not have the ability to support Interval workouts.  For purposes of clarity, I have included instructions for Interval (track) workouts on a Forerunner 245/245 Music:

    4. (The question in your last post in this thread): The Garmin Venu does not support Interval (Track Running) workouts, but you can create Strength or Cardio workouts which can include a workout/exercise/movement and a time limitation (20 seconds, 40 seconds, 60 seconds, etc.)
If you would like further clarification/details on this process, I would be happy to provide you the contact information for your local Garmin Support team if you let me know in what country you live.
