Software update today on Garmin Vivoactive 4 causing crashes and 50% battery drain within 5 hours

There was a message on my watch today for a software update. I had charged my watch the previous day and normally get 4-5 days out of it After allowing the watch to install the update, within hours of was at 5%. I charged it to 100% and 5 hours later if is now at 42% (it has lost 3% whilst writing this comment). Nothing has changed except the software update. I do not have pulse oxygen on or music. The watch face I am using is a very basic one which I've been using for 4 months with no problems. I have not used the GPS today.

The watch is also now refusing to connect to the Connect app on my LG G5 android phone.and the watch is crashing and rebooting regularly any time I try to use the menus.

I have no idea what the update was but my current versions are as follows:

Sw version 5.6

GPS 4.80

Ant/ble/bt 6.11

Wi-Fi 2.60

Tsc 200

Sensor 8.02

Whr 1.00.06

Connect iq 3.2.4

BMX 1.0.6

Secondary BMX 0.8.0

I have been very impressed to-date with this watch. I also understand that sometimes bugs are introduced with software releases. Please could you advise on the best way to get this resolved, eg. How to rollback the software update that just occurred, or how to access event logs on the phone to allow you better chance of a diagnosis.

Kind regards

Chris Chamberlain

  • I recently got a time zone software update, so that was probably the one you got. I doubt that there is something wrong with that update, but sometimes the installation process goes wrong. Try holding the top button for a minute or so, and force the watch off. Leave it off for a minute, and power it back up.

  • Thanks Ovekvam, I did try this but with no luck. The watch continued to discharge at an even faster rate. It may well have been a failed update. I have now performed a factory reset and that seems to have completely cleared the issue. Phew!

    Thanks for the response though.

  • Very important - before doing so, sync your watch, because any data that is still on the watch is lost after this reset...

  • Agreed. I was in the unfortunate circumstance of syncing failing due to it being unable to read a file. But if you are able to sync, then you should.

  • I will add that I too am no experiencing a very poor battery life after this update  prior to this I had around 4 day battery life using GPS and music  today I have lost 50% battery in 5 hours just using this as a watch, no GPS or music.

I have only ever used the standard Garmin watch faces.

  • Sounds like the update process went wrong on your watch as well, then. I guess you can fix it by a factory reset.

  • And now with Version 5.80.0.0 I am back to square one again. Very rapid battery drain (within hours) and constant reboots even when charging.

Garmin, please could you advise the best course of action. I am in the uk.

    Kind regards

  • Reboot the watch by holding the upper button until the watch turns itself off (20 seconds or so) then turn it back on.

  • Unfortunately not. I've tried rebooting and resetting and neither worked this time. I believe from another post that Garmin are aware that there is a serious problem with 5.80.0.0 and have requested that users with issues contact them. I shall be finding that message again and replying to that to see if there is any progress.
