Water rating / going under water / diving

Hello everyone

As stated in the watch specs (vivoactive 4):

Water Rating: 5 ATM

Withstands pressures equivalent to a depth of 50 meters

splashes, rain or snow, showering, swimming, diving into water, snorkeling

So in theory it could hande scuba diving / free diving at 10m - 20m

But it does not say for how long though. It's not the same being at -15m for 30min than 1 hour. Nor is the same to descend at kicking speed than slowly.

But have anyone done it?

It's not so much about depth but about pressure. If you swim the movement of your arms will give increase water pressure. The same if you swim while diving what you most certainly will do. 10m to 20m are…

I have, but for a short while(~3-5 mins). When I got back home I rinsed it very well with fresh water.

The standards are not set by garmin, they just follow some ISO standards.

I wonder if anyone actually swim with them in salty water and how does that affect band and the case of the watch?

Sea water is not much worse than sweat. In fact, sweat can be more harmful in some circumstances. So anyway, using it in sea water should be no problem, although it is advisable to rinse the watch in fresh water after sea water use.

good point! and yes I try to rinse it every time after training and was going to do so if I have a chance to try it at sea

The same if you swim while diving what you most certainly will do. 10m to 20m are already 2-3ATM just by being there. Not much tolerance... So you should not dive with that watch.

thanks! I guess it should be fine to swim in them but I thought it would be nice to hear experience of real people who actually tried it.

Driving yes, my car, my motorcycle ;)
Diving, I haven't had a chance (COVID restrictions and all ). The only thing I did as -2 meter in the swimming pool.

I read somewhere not to press the buttons when underwater. Don't know, but seems like good advice.
