Sleep monitoring and Movement

Hi All,

I have written about this before and I understand the limitations of wrist based sleep monitoring, however, since Garmin uses movement and HR as the main sources of determining sleep stages can anyone tell me please why the short period at the beginning of the night with lots of movement is considered deep sleep and those periods later in the evening with no movement at all are considered light sleep?

I was also wondering if the amount of movement I have is considered normal as it seems to create patterns of on and off REM sleep.

My partner wears a fitbit watch right next to me and regularly records 2-2.5 hours of deep sleep. I know most of deep sleep is supposed to occur early in the night but she records deep sleep at times at 2-3am.

Thank you.
