Heart Rate Spikes while Sleeping

I was looking over my data from yesterday and noticed that my heart rate spiked considerably during the night while I was asleep (normally it stays between 50-60 and it went from 80-120) and then there was no data from the rest of the night. I’ve been having heart palpitations recently and so went to the doctor who did a stress test, ekg, and two week holter monitor, which came back normal but I’ve been stressed about my heart recently and this is making it worse. Has anyone else had something like this happen and was it a mistake or was your heart rate actually spiking? Thanks!

  • Most nights my heart rate is recorded as very stable in the forties. I have however seen spikes on rare occasions, maybe up to 70-80 BPM. I have assumed it must have been a special dream that upset me. I have never seen the signal drop out completely. That looks like a mistake, and not a real measurement.

  • I've noticed this for the past 3 nights on my Vivoactive 4. I've been using the watch, & wearing it to bed most nights, for about a year at this point, & not seen anything like this previously. My working assumption is that this is due to a software update, which is causing anomalous data that might otherwise be reported as null, to be reported as a high heart rate. (This is kind of a pain, since it registers as 'Activity' in Garmin Connect, which throws off my activity tracking boty in Garmin Connect & apps it syncs with, such as Cronometer & Strava.)

  • Hey everyone.  If you are experiencing this issue, please reboot your watch's heart rate sensor using the instructions below:

    1. Hard reset the watch.  To perform a hard reset, press and hold the power button on your watch.  Ignore the "Power Off" question and the assistance alert (if applicable) on your watch, just continue holding the power button pressed down until the screen goes blank.  Once this occurs, you may release the button.  Allow the watch to sit powered off for a few seconds, then you may power it back on by pressing and releasing the power button.
    2. Turn the heart rate sensor back on (using the instructions in step 1 as a guide).
