battery drain after gps activity

My vivoactive 4 is about 2 months old and I had the original vivoactive previously.

I've noticed that after I do a gps activity (run or walk), the battery keeps draining faster until I power cycle the watch.

After a reboot and full charge it uses about .5% per hour, but after an activity it will use 2-5% per hour.

Today a few hours after a walk I was fiddling with it to try find out why and went into a GPS walk activity and it instantly had a GPS lock. It got me thinking that perhaps the GPS has stayed on all this time after my activity. Then I didn't start the activity, but went out and back into the activity and it then made me wait for a GPS lock.

Perhaps I'm not operating the watch correctly and closing out of the activity after my walks and runs that cause the GPS to remain on.

After finishing and accepting the prompt to save the activity, I'm presented with a summary of the activity. What is the appropriate action to return to the watch function and stop the GPS properly? I've just been hitting B until it gets back to the watch, but tomorrow I'll try leaving it until it closes on it's own.

Thanks

  • Hello! To be sure the GPS is still not running after a workout. Are you stopping then waiting for it to save? Can you tell me what SW you are on?

  • Yes, I’m definitely stopping the activity and saving.

    SW version is 5.60

  • After today's walk I took some extra care to see how I'm supposed to close out of an activity.

I noticed that on the summary screen you can swipe up from the bottom and choose 'Done'. This has made the GPS close off correctly and the battery drain did not occur as it has on past days.

I believe there may be a bug, that if you close out of the summary screen by pressing 'B' instead of choosing 'Done' via the touch screen, that the GPS remains active.

I'll do some more tests of both methods of closing the summary and report back, but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has suffered with this issue.

Please keep me updated. This is something I can test out on my vivoactive 4 today as well.

  • Dear Garmin,

I found this conversation since I'm having the same problem with my Vivoactive 4. After an activity the battery consumption is double (1% vs 0,5% per hour). The consuption will reset to 0,5% as soon as the devide will be charged.

So far I tested it with "Cycling" activity. I stop the activity with "A" and then using the touch screen I save it.

My Vivoactive 4 is really new (one month) and SW is 6.50

Do you have any suggestions in order to solve this issue?

  • After doing a Save, select Done.  It is further down on the list.
