Why does this watch require constant manual syncing?

My wife has an Apple Watch which just works all the time. This VA4 is never up to date with information like weather unless you sync it. The hydration tracking hardly ever pushes the information to my iPhone 11 (5 out of 35 days so far). I wonder if mine is just a one off or if they are all so ‘dumb’?!

  • Sounds like the Apple Watch is syncing all the time, then. Maybe that explains why the battery drains so fast.

  • Good point on the battery drain. Interestingly it seems like some info does not require a manual sync - like Calendar seems to update on it's own.

  • I understand that is what’s happening. I just find it really frustrating that the VA4 is never up to date and constantly needs manually syncing. I wish they’d give the option to sync all the time if you’re not concerned with battery longevity. I’d prefer to have a watch that works and have to charge it every other night than to have a watch with out of date information on it which lasts for 4 days. Nowhere on the expensive VA4 website does it say that you will spend most of your time with out of date information!

  • I understand the concerns. do you know if it is documented what data is "always sent" (Like steps and calendar) vs what needs a sync?

Hello! Do you keep the Garmin Connect App running in the background of your phone or do you close out of it every time?

  • I close out of it every time. I guess your next suggestion is going to be to keep it open permanently?! It seems odd that half of the information on the phone is synced and updated as and when required yet hydration and weather constantly has a red rainbow over the watch screen which states that I need to open the app. It’s annoying, I expected this watch to work perfectly in the background but unfortunately it requires constant babying; I’ve never been on to a forum because of issues with any smart tech before.

Hey! Unfortunately, the Connect app will need to be continuously running in the background for the constant sync for the information to match. I am sorry if this causes any frustration.

  • To me appears that users often have requests to make their life easier -. at least more convenient. On the other hand side, most of these requests seems to be easy to implement.

    Example:
    - Adjustable permanent sync
    -  No touch function Display while device is locked

Both are low hanging fruits. Not sure why Garmin prefers not to invest into general improvements.

  • Exactly, they must be fairly easy fixes to implement by Garmin. I wish I’d have done more research on this watch; you can only add two different barely known  Visa cards to Garmin pay and you can’t use Apple Music easily with it, both massive downsides for me!

  • Have you guys tried syncing by Wifi instead? In that case, Garmin Connect is not involved.
