Cycling with Vivoactive 4 and Edge 830

Hi all

I have the Edge 830 and Vivoactive 4, when our cycling I start my Vivoactive 4 which broadcasts my heart rate to the Edge 830 which seems to be the more advanced unit and allows me to use its navigation features.

When I get home I throw away the workout on the Vivoactive and keep the one from the Edge else I end up with duplicates (annoyingly, I wish Garmin would auto merge them this would encourage people to invest in there platform across multiple devices)

What I wanted to know is doing it this way am I throwing data away? I’m in particular thinking of the VO2max and training status?

Many thanks.

  • Thinking of buying 830 too.

In VA4 your VO2max is only calculated for running. The 830 calculates VO2max for cycling. I presume these two could differ, like you can have different max HR in both sports.

Do you send your HR to your 830 and is your HR saved in the graphs of your 830 activity log?

  • Yes, I set the VA to broadcast in activity, this then broadcasts over ANT+ which the Edge just sees as a heart rate sensor and captures the data itself in the same way a chest hr sensor would without needing the chest strap, this was a big plus over my previous Fitbit which was very much a closed and they didn't broadcast in this way.

It also means if you do a spin class if the spin bike can see ANT+ devices it can pick up the heart rate, same with Concept2, sadly however it doesn't broadcast Bluetooth, so you are limited to ANT+ devices.

It should be noted the VA does not support the remote display on the Edge, however from what I've read this function just displays the information from your watch and locks other functions which isn't that helpful as I like using the navigation features.

I do love my Edge 830, it's actually updating it's cycle map in the background as I speak.

I'm surprised Garmin doesn't automatically grab and align the data across its devices and boast this fact so more people buy into there platform and stick to there brand, to me that would be a no brainer.

  • I agree. Another option is to set broadcast HR to allways, not only during activity. Then you don't have to start an activity on VA4, only on 830. But it's not userfriendly to fiddle with menu's to switch broadcast HR on/off, would be nice to include that in the shortcutsmenu.

  • Hello! You will want to record the activity on the edge and broadcast from the watch. If you have a speed sensor connected to the app remove it so it does not duplicate the activity. In regards to losing any data, no you are not losing anything when deleting the duplicate.

  • Hi Amber,

You mentioned if you have a speed sensor remove it from the app, I don't have a speed sensor but my VA and Edge both have GPS and if I let it upload it creates the data in duplicate.  Should I turn GPS off on the watch?  I assume then however I will lose the incident protection?

What I do currently is discard the activity directly on my watch before it uploads.

I hope Garmin is working on auto-merging the data during the upload or in app to make it simpler in the future.

  • You can but it seriously drains the battery, also the incident detection won't work from your watch, it will work from the Edge, however I got knocked off my bike by a 4x4 not looking turning right and the Edge didn't detect it, however the other day I was cycling and stopped to clear my glasses learning over when I stopped triggered an incident countdown on my watch, although it was a false alarm it did give me the confidence it was looking out for me.
