Calories burned high

Does anyone have an issue with calories burned being high for all activities?  I have been wearing my VA4 and my Fitbit Charge 3 at the same time on different hands.  For example, yesterday I rode 10 minutes on my exercise bike in the basement.  Here are the results:

VA4:  10min 9 sec, 123 avg bpm, peak 134 bpm, calories burned 100

Fitbit Charge 3:  9 min, 56 sec, 127 avg bpm, peak 139 bpm, calories burned 44

On the VA4, I tried suggestions from previous posts - reset the HR zone and changed the activity class.

Has anyone else experienced this or know a solution?

  • I don't know your weight or maximum heart rate, but based on an average person, the calorie estimate from the Fitbit sounds a bit on the low side.

  • I have this problem too, but I think for me it's heart rate related. Garmin thinks my heart rate is high and never goes back down during exercise, whereas fitbit shows a much larger range between lows and highs during exercise. 10 min for me wouldn't be more than 50 calories either so if we're similar size (I'm a very small person) I'd check the heart rate data. Other than that, I hope you find an answer because my garmin wildly over reports not only exercise but also active (steps) and RMR.

(I know it's over reporting because I've been keeping a log of my calories in, out, and weight, and even though my weight has remain the same, garmin thinks I should have lost more than 5 entire pounds at this point.) Joy

  • It looks to me, that Garmin includes burned calories during an activity  together with adequate portion of basal calories in the activity record. It makes a big difference when HR is slow, similar to rest HR. But if you export the activity, then it is separated.
