Multitasking possible?

The typical use of compass or navigation is during a hike/walk. But that means ending your activity, start the widget, end the widget and then start a new activity when you continue. That sort of messes up your statistics. It's 2021 now, why isn't it possible to use widgets during an activity? Or am i missing something here?

You can swipe out of activities and use widgets, then swipe back. I often swipe out to check time, steps, buy things and so on. Activity runs in the background.

You can also add a data field to a native activity to show compass, or use an app that shows it. For example, there's Hike2+ https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/116a5b59-29ae-4397-a70e-907d7e5f8e44

all kinds of things are available right in the app - compass, breadcrumb trail, GPS location, weather, steps, calories, and more.
