Vivoactive 4s, counting steps while driving car?

My wifes VA4S counts steps when driving the car. What is the reason for this and how to stop the watch from counting steps while driving? Noticed this recently during a two hour drive when it collected more than 24.000 steps.

  • The watch detects steps whenever a rhythmic acceleration is detected, such as swinging your arm while walking or driving on a bumpy road.

  • I can drive for hours in our BMW 1-series without getting a single step. I don't get any steps bicycling on gravel roads either. Previous Fitbit watches did however count lots of steps in the same situations. So does my mobile phone. My impression is that Garmin is quite good at filtering out what is real walking.

That depends on road surface and speed. Usually I don't get any steps in a car, either, however on some roads while driving fast, I do get steps.

  • The fact that you can't count cycling toward steps annoys me. I have a cadence sensor on my bike so it could easily converts the pedals rotation toward steps. There are even conversion charts for that kind of thing.

To 'solve' that problem, I wear my watch on my thigh (under my bibs) so it can count my 'steps' while cycling :-)
