Chest straps

Is there any way I can check to see if the chest strap was connected after completing a run?

I ran this morning and normally I get a notification the strap is connected, I may have missed this and I have an unusual spike in my heart rate.  It would be good to know if the strap was connected and I would like to check retrospectively.

Thanks

  • I don't think strap usage is logged, but in my case it is easy to see the difference in the graph between the chest strap and the wrist sensors. The chest signal is significantly smoother.

    • Export the activity from Garmin Connect Web using Export Original
    • Unzip the FIT file
    • Go to https://fit2tcx.runalyze.com/temp/
    • Choose file and upload the FIT file
    • Click view
    • Do a find on page for "hrm" and you should see your heart rate monitor being used. For example, my chest strap HRM is hrm3ss

  • It is well documented that auxiliary watch HRMs eg. Chest straps (CSHRM)  are more accurate than watch wrist/optical HRM (WHRM). I use a CSHRM for most running and cardio activities. It would be desirable that users be able verify the source of HR data on the watch face and later within Garmin Connect.

I usually get the ‘Heart rate connected’ or similar message when I start an activity but not always. That message is brief and easily missed. I have also had occasions where the chest strap has lost the pulse during an activity (I assume due to poor contact). In those cases I assume the watch eventually reverts to WHRM reading.

    # Is there a watchface icon/flag or change of display colour OR in Garmin Connect after an activity has been synced :- to indicate when non-WHRM sourced data is used.

I have confirmed (as seilogramp has previously posted) that the HRM source is recorded as metadata for an activity and is exported in the FIT file, so it should be possible to provide this information in a more readily viewable form.

    # Can any user tell me if this information (CSHRM) is provided in a ConnectIQ widget.

Some fitness assessments use a HR recovery score (1 & 2 minutes after activity is stopped).

    # As CSHRM only functions during an activity are these assessments using the CSHRM or reverting to less accurate WHRM.

    Thanks
