Is Wahoo Tickr Chest strap HRM compatible with Garmin Active 4

I am interested to know if you have to turn OFF OHR in the watch to be able to use Wahoo Tickr HRM chest strap. I bought one and the heart rate is inconsistent, as I start on treadmill it reads on high side like 139 BPM and as I am right in to my run it starts reading below 100 BPM then jumps to high side, the charts are straight line of heart rate (same BPR) for few minutes at a time.

Curious to know if anyone else has same problem.

  • My Garmin chest strap sometimes connects to my running cadence, typically the first couple of minutes of a run. It will say my heart rate is something like 175, while it is supposed to be 140 or so. After a while it drops to the correct value.

  • No issues with my Tickr...

Are you connected via Ant+ or Bluetooth? I wouldn't rely on Bluetooth, as Garmin devices have historically performed less reliably with BT than Ant+ in my experience.

The only issue I experience is when the air its brutally dry and it's windy, I sometimes there are issues with the synthetic material of my riding jersey creating static and causing interference. However this is super rare and fixed with a little splash of water.

Also, If I wear my Tickr HRM, and then go into the heart rate widget, it will automatically switch from showing optical to the chest heart rate value.

If you wet the chest strap rubber contact patches and you are still having issues then you may have a faulty ticker? Perhaps check with another device? Wahoo also has an app that you can use to check for software update and determine if the tickr is working correctly.

Maybe the VA4 just needs a restart.

    Hope it's a simple fix!

  • When you go into the sensor settings of the device and add the heart rate strap, the wrist based HR will automatically turn off when doing an activity.

  • Mine is inconsistent through out the session. I believe I have a lemon.

  • I have tried both ant+ & Bluetooth, I have also tried turning off OHR & Pulse OX on my Garmin watch. I am convinced I got a faulty HRM. First Wahoo product, not impressed.

  • Hi Amber, it is supposed to automatically switch to HRM but my Wahoo Tickr is faulty. Returning the unit soon.

  • Bad luck. I wouldn't let it influence your opinion on Wahoo though. Lemons exist, it's just how things are. I would buy Wahoo without thinking whereas I would not buy Garmin due to repetitive hardware faults across various devices.

Your watch doesn't need the OHR switched off, nor needing fiddling with pulse ox. If you have paired a HRM with the watch and start an exercise, it will ONLY log the HRM data. Bluetooth is notoriously flaky with Garmin devices. I've had issues with any Bluetooth accessories even those from Garmin like speed and cadence sensors, across every Garmin device, be it the VA4, forerunners and a EDGE 530. Ant+ is always more reliable with Garmin products.
