Why are the Calories expended different in Garmin Connect after a workout on a bike with apower meter

I've just done a workout on my bike which I recorded on my Edge 520 which showed (from my power meter) 751kj work and 750 Cals.

I wore my Vivoactive 4 and when looking on Garmin Connect it shows only 632 Active Calories ( and that includes some general walking calories as well.

Am I doing something wrong or is the information on Carmin Connect just garbage.

Thanks

  • My guess is that Garmin subtracts the passive calories you spent during the activities.

  • Thanks but with a power meter it gives the actual calories used in the activity with no passive calories. If anything it should add those on

  • It will use the power meter to calculate the actual work done (751kJ), but the calories (750 Cals) burnt will be the sum of the metabolism needed to stay alive, and the additional calories (based on heart rate) needed to perform the activity. You could try to start a bike ride activity, and just lie down to rest for an hour. It should give you zero kJ of work, and something like 80 calories burnt. Zero active calories.
