Anybody getting reasonable BRPM values? Me not...

Hi all,

are there some special requirements to get meaningful BRPM values?

After wondering why my graph never shwed below 10 breaths per minute, I did tests with 6, 12 and 24 breaths per minute. The indicated value (in the Yoga activity) was always 11 to 14 breaths per minute.

Am I the only one experiencing this problem or is the BRPM measurement unusable?

  • I've only just found the forums, and I've got a similar problem. I do both yoga and running, and while the watch is great for the latter, it does some funny things with BRPM and stress during yoga. As I'm not bothered by how it measures yoga, I don't usually look at the graphs, but a couple of weeks ago, it decided I was so stressed just after doing a "restorative" yoga session, it recommended that I do the breath control thing, so I looked at the graph, which showed near 100 stress for 50 minutes. And it's the same most times. It seems _better_ with a HRM strap (from an old forerunner). And I seem to be getting the hang of slower breathing so it recognises it. And it seems roughly right for sleep (which goes down to 7 breaths pm). 

    I'm not complaining--yet. It could be me not getting my breathing right, but it has made me wonder.

  • mine detects neither high nor low BRPM even halfway correctly and the "stress level" also doesn't seem to be meaningful. That's rather disappointing.

    I wonder how accurate SpO2 is.

    Starting a yoga activity on the watch an breathing a steady 6 BPM, the watch started with 15 BPM and worked itself down to 11 with a stress score of 51. 

    And that's just sitting at a desk not moving my wrist. Best case for the optical HRM. Probably best to use a chest HRM.

    Stress levels when you are active is such a joke, and funny thing; you can have the most stressful day of the year but if you are constantly moving and it cannot measure it it will ludicrously tell you "Great job you had enough relaxing moments to balance out your stress reactions!" - when you in fact didn't even have time to sit down the whole day. Hilarious levels of ridiculousness.

    But when you are resting the stress measure actually has potent. I've noted if I have high stress when resting/sleeping I'm catching a cold, or something else funky is going on with my body like indigestion / stomach problems. Helps me to slow down and let myself recover instead of trying to brush it off as nothing.

  • Yes, I've found that stress doesn't seem to mean much. It's not without value, I agree, and it seems good for rest, but what I find stressful and it finds stressful are often different things.
