Changing music/using widgets during an activity?

Is there no way to change the song or get back to the home screen while doing an activity? For example, I would like to skip a song during my walk or check my notifications. Am I missing something or is that not a feature (why would that not be a feature?)

    To get to Watch Face during activity, swipe screen from left to right. After that scroll up or down to desired screen/widget (eg music controls). If you leave the watch on that screen, after a short delay it will revert back to the activity screen. Next time you swipe left to right it will go to the last accessed non-activity screen.

    This does not work on my Venu SQ but it does on my wife and sons. Is there a setting for this?
