Vivoactive 4s - Troubleshooting the watch (battery draining)

Hi all,

Since a while, I see many people have issues with their VA4(s) with the battery of the watch draining too fast.
Like many of you, I performed almost every suggestion I could find on this forum (and the internet) for trying to fix this issue.

The watch is running all latest firmware(s), I reverted to stock settings and stock watch faces. Turned logic energy consuming features off (bluetooth, heavy watch faces). But I can't get the watch lower then a 1.366%/h on a full battery load. I average in between 2 to 3 days for 1 battery load, which is not acceptable. (else I would have bought the Venue)
I have the feeling there is a software component or driver using energy for tasks that are not needed, or tasks that are never finished. (busy waiting / busy checking forever)
Maybe it's worth to mention I use this watch in combination with an iOS device.

A next step for me is leveling up the troubleshooting on the watch. I want to understand which component / software / driver is using power on a constant pace and causing the watch to drain so fast.
Are there any guides, tips or tricks I can use to perform this kind of troubleshooting? Is there any way I can get involved in helping troubleshooting this problem or joining a beta program?

I'm curious if multiple people also see this pattern.

Appreciate the help!

Kind regards,
Burn

  • Hi, I tried doing all this and have done it another few times but i am still losing between 35-40% overnight. I have got it on default brightness, no apps installed, SpO2 is off. Is there anything else you can suggest

  • Im having the same problems... I bought the watch about 12 days ago and at first I thought the battery drained because of the watchface I donwloaded (infocal)  but even when I use the stock watcface the battery drains extremely fast. This morning it had 40% and after a couple of hours the battery is empty. If there comes no solution I will probably send it back because that's not the watch that i'm searching for. So fix this please!!

  • I’m exactly the same. I’ve tried turning the GPS off, different watch faces. WiFi on, off, etc... by the end of the day I have about 50% left of battery, if I’m lucky, and by next morning between 5-10% Unamused. The watch is running on an IOS system, but still battery life should be similar as stated by Garmin, it is even written on the outside of the box.

My watch arrived less than a week ago and I do love the way it looks, the shape plus it is really comfortable when exercising, but I am wondering what is the point of buying a smart watch where you have to turn everything off to make the battery last for more than one day? I did buy the watch to use as a smart watch but more specifically to record and analyse my workout data, if I have to turn everything off, then is the watching really fit for purpose?

I’m sure with so many of us are having a similar problem, Garmin needs to update or investigate what is the software fault with this unit.

  • I have had my VA4S over 3 months. I noticed battery draining about 5 times, mostly happened during overnight with 50% draining. It never happened during an activity. I am going to reset the watch to defaults and see what happens.

  • Hi,

I have a Vivoactive 4S which is 3 months old and the battery is draining out.
I followed the steps here and it is still draining out. This sucks!

Please assist ASAP. This is not a low cost watch.

  • Hi Amber,

There was a post from Garmin, about 4 months ago (I’ve tried to copy it for you but it was security blocked). The post was from Garmin-Amber D (page before) and that seems to have fixed my watch. I tried before deleting data, changing watch faces, gps on off etc, but nothing worked until I did what she said. It has to be all the steps, including getting a full power connected to your laptop. I’ve also noticed that after the last update the watch is running a bit more efficient.

I do hope it works, as you say it is an expensive watch, plus one of the features that made me and prob you buy it too, instead of an Apple Watch, was the battery life. Who wants to charge a watch daily?

    Good luck, Dani P

HI there! Thank you for this feedback. I am glad your device is working as it should. If you have any concerns or questions please feel free to tag me.

  • Instead of Thank You, can we get the actual instructions, please?

  • I've just got the device a couple of days ago, and it took several hours to customize it. Seems kind of stupid to do it all over again.

  • HI, Can you tell me what is going on with your device specifically please? Is it, you are experiencing battery drain? I see you mentioned setting up took a few hours, does that mean you have multiple apps and or watch faces downloaded to the device? If so, this will drain your battery significantly.
