Is the Vivoactive 4 worth it?

I have a Forerunner 245 music and my girlffriend wants a sportwatch too.

What does she need? Strengh training (1-2x per week) , walking (every day tracking), to hike (sometimes), running (sometimes), biking (rarely) and even swimming someimes. I´ve said, the Forerunner 245m could track this all! The battery lasts for about 5-6days (1h gps usage per day).

The questions:

1) How long does the battery lasts compared to my Forerunner?

2) Why should she or someone else buy the Vivoactive 4, if the Forerunner 245 could also track this activitys(and even better, because the metrics are more detailed)?

Thanks :) (I would personally recommand the Forerunner 245m to her, but she wanted me to ask you :-)... )

  • Short answer:No

Long answer: While the list of features is pretty long and on paper it sounds like a good deal, for this price there is no other watch that can do all that what is claimed. But it's bad at doing everything it claims. It's gps is pretty off, heart rate depends on which activity you chose, pulse ox is pretty crap as well, Bluetooth connectivity often falls out and above all, the battery life for most people isn't even half of what's claimed.

It's probably better to buy either something cheaper from Garmin or something more expensive like a Fenix series or cheaper forerunner. You'll save some money and probably get what's advertised.

  • So as I said, the forerunner would be much better instead of the viviactive?

The fenix can do more than the forerunner.. but there is no need for this, so its not worth too

The vivosmart is the "little" vivoactive/forerunner isn't it? But its little :D..

  • Yup, forerunner 245 would be a good choice. Plus it gives you training status metrics which vivoactive doesn't which I don't understand why!

  • Thanks! Thank you all

  • So, I just bought a Fenix 6 and my girlfriend just bought a VA4s. Would I be happy with the VA4s? No. I'm a dweeb and like to geek out over all the info my Fenix gives me, I like the maps, battery life, and buttons. But, that literally doesn't matter at all. It's not a watch for me, it's a watch for her, and she loves it!

She's a casual athlete, she wanted a watch that will track her gym workouts 5x a week, daily activity tracking, and she just started a garmin coach plan for a half marathon with her new watch so she uses it for outdoor runs 4-5x a week. Another big plus for the watch for her are its looks. It is a very good looking watch. It wouldn't look out of place with a business casual outfit while something like a 245 would. She is also very happy with the fact that she can load music onto it and no longer has to run with her phone.

So, this watch isn't a top of the line watch that has all the bells and whistles, but I think a lot of people (like my girlfriend) don't really care about that. I don't think she would even look at the performance metrics like load, training status, etc if she had them. I think it's the perfect watch for someone like her.

PS she is getting better GPS tracks with her VA4s than I'm getting with my F6. Oh, and there isn't a "hike" activity natively on the watch but there are 3rd party workarounds on CIQ.

  • Thanks! 3rd party activites are also working fine?

I guess my girlfriend wants this extra metrics, so it will be the forerunner 245... but today she saw the vivomove style. really cool watch! maybe this would be her choice

  • VA4 is totally unworthy to buy with this price... Better to buy  Fenix 5+
