Paypal support for GarminPay planned?

Dear community, I was wondering if Garmin is at least planning the support for Paypal. After looking a bit on google, I found a couple of other people asking the same, but with no conclusion. Of course there are various payment solutions for each country for Garmin's smartwatches, but most of them do have a dependency to a few banks. In other words, I find it pretty annoying to make a new bank account just for the purpose of paying with my watch (Vivoactive 4).

Would be also interested to know if there is a possibility to request for this feature somewhere on Garmin's website (didn't find any).

Cheers

But for this it's really up to the financial institution, so you may want to also ask paypal.

Thanks for the link! I will request this feature shortly.

On the other hand, I think it's not completely fair to ask only the financial institution (paypal) for support, in the end it's the manufacturer (Garmin) who should decide what their products support and what they don't. I think that Garmin did not really think this through, they could have simply implemented Google Pay support (which enjoys a wider adoption worldwide), then they would not have to think about acceptance of the payment system in each country. Even if there are options available, I would assume that no one wants to open yet another bank account just to be able to pay with their smartwatch. Besides the US, all other countries (eg. in Europe) have a pretty short list of banks who accept Garmin Pay...

  • The banks/FIs take the risk.  That's why for example, you'll see some banks that use Visa/Mastercard supported by GP, but not all banks that support Visa/Mastercard.  Then it also comes down to if the merchant supports GP.

I still partially disagree, especially with the statement that this is up to the financial institutions. In the end, Garmin would have to support the paypal payment system and update their own Connect app, so that one has the option to choose between credit card and paypal.

As long as every brand makes their own soup, we are not going to get very far (think about the multiple phone charging cables we were using 10+ years ago, until all but Apple finally agreed on a universal USB standard).

    cheers

  • Generally speaking, it's up to the financial institution to support GarminPay (or Andorid pay or apple pay).

Paypal is kind of different animal ... although, if I were to guess, they could support it through their own payment card system ... in which case it would definitely be up to PayPal to support GarminPay.

  • Garmin have to come to an agreement with the financial institution to allow their card to be used on Garmin devices. The software is there and the hardware is there. PayPal is just the platform for the transaction. PayPal use Synchrony bank as the financial institution for their credit cards and debit cards. Hope that helps
