Heart Rate not accurate in "Yoga" activity (reported HR too low) but fine in "Cardio" activity.

I'd really like for it to work the same in both.

It feels like they're making the assumption that "Yoga" mean slow, hold poses etc. kind of yoga.
I'm a 6'4" (semi-fit at best) dude that really loves the yoga where you're always transitioning positions and the room is 100 degrees, they call it "hot vinyasa flow".
My heartrate once I get going sits between 130 and 170 and I always keep an eye on it and back off when I hit 170 otherwise I redline real quick.

In yoga mode heart rate is always low. If i switch and record the activity as generic "Cardio" my heart rate reports right up to where it should be. "Should be" is compared to my old Garmin Forerunner 35 (which I tested to within ~5bpm of my cheap chest strap).

Is there anything I can do other than stick with Cardio mode and hope that Garmin fixes it at some point?

  • If you have an Ant+ chest strap already, you can connect that as an external sensor for Yoga activity. If you are not using the Poses feature of yoga activity, which I'm guessing not given fast transitions, then maybe just record as Cardio ...

  • Yeah, I guess this isn't really the place for me to bring it up. It's an actual support request since the HRM feature works accurately in other modes but not in Yoga mode.

I have the same issue when I do yoga. All other activities seem to record accurately. Were you able to ever receive an answer from Garmin?

  • To be honest I ended up not contacting them since my yoga studio has been closed, but this is a good reminder. I'll contact them and if you do as well they may take it more seriously and look into it, i can't imagine it's not a simple fix since every other mode works fine.

I used the cardio mode this morning and it tracked my HR perfectly. I just went in and edited the activity in Connect once complete and changed it to Yoga for my tracking purposes. I'm going to try using the "Train" mode tomorrow and see if it's as successful.

  • Yeah, I've been using "Cardio" but it's just crazy that Yoga mode doesn't work. I send them a support email this morning.

  • Here's an example of what I'm seeing. Heart rate accuracy just disappears in yoga activity and never even seems like it's following a similar pattern to the forerunner.
Compare that to the Vivoactive for Run activity and the patterns match a lot closer.
I'm _still_ going back and forth with Garmin support because they keep closing the ticket and not actually sending it to technical.
For the image the comparison is from top to bottom. I should have put a line to separate things better but I forgot.

  • Hi

    Did you get any feedback?

    am having the same problem.

I have been doing a 20 min HIIT workout every second day for the past 10 days. I always recorded it as cardio and I had an average heart rate between 135-140 and a max of around 170. I could also always recognise the 3 sets of the workout in my heart rate.

Today I accidentaly chose yoga and the heart rate I got was completely different. I got an average of 98(!) and max. of 155, which for sure was not the case. I nthe graph the 3 sets were not recognisable.

Now I am also wondering if the values i get for the yoga workouts I do are correct, or ig I should always siply choose cardio, no matter what the workout is. Now I am not sure if the selection of the selection of the workout somehow influences the heart rate the watch shows you.

I used to have whoop for a year, since November and there the heart rate was always recorded and I could just select the workout even after I had completed it. The chosen type of activity wouldnt effect the data. I am really disappointed with what I got here. At least the heart rate yo uget, should be correct, its the minimum you can ask from a fitness watch!

Curious for hte answer you got!

  • When I use cardio activity for a weight lifting session, my heart rate is recorded as way too high. For cardio workouts, it seems to be mostly correct. I think this makes sense.

  • But the activity chosen should not influence the heart rate. The only thing that should change is the data that are shown, for example when you choose running, you als osee the route you run or when you do youga it makes sense to als osee your breathing, but otherwise, the heart rate should not be influenced, it is the value that is recorded and that should be it! I dont get it why it should be different based o nthe activity chosen.
