Active Calories Discrepancy

Former Member

HiJoy so i have tracked two walks today. Where it says i burned 240 on one of them, and 95 on the other one. That should be 335 in total. Yet the active calories show 319. Why is that?

  • The answer could be right there in your title Wink ...

I'm guessing that there was a discrepancy in duration and/or intensity between the walks given that one has double the calorie count of the other. Calories for an activity will have 2 components:

    • Active (relates to intensity accumulated over the total time of the activity)
    • Resting (just the "being alive" component, duration only)

A brief activity won't include much in the way of resting calories,  but a longer one will. Between the two activities I'm guessing the resting component will be enough to account for the discrepancy  you see. Note you don't have to have resting HR periods during an activity to accumulate resting minutes:just being alive will do that Wink

Have a look on your phone [GCM] to see Resting/Active/Total Calories for the day ... Do those figures add up as expected ?

  • Hi, I burned 142 calories doing sone snow shovelling, yet active calories is 104 in the calories widget.I dont know why, its a bit confusing.

Activity calories include the resting calories for that period of time.

Lets say you burn about 80 resting calries per hour. U did 30 minutes snow shovelling.

That means 40 resting calories. 140- 40 so about 100 active calories.

  • ok, I've always thought that activity calories did not include resting calories. So from now I will focus on the active calories. I also found a clarification of activity vs active calories in the support centre Calorie Terminology
