hear rate in cross country skiing activity

I'm using my Vivoactive 4 "cross country skiing" activity while skiing and I have noticed that HR hardly goes over 100 BPM, even real HR is between 130 - 160 BPM (verified with another watch). I have tried to adjust watch position on my wrist etc, but HR-levels are still same. Walking or running activities are working fine and those are giving proper hear rate information.

Does any one else facing similar issues in cross country skiing activity? Garmin support, help!?

  • Yes! I noticed the same with the same device. I don't have another HRM to check, but when I'm skating up a steep hill, having to rest because I'm so out of breath, I can not believe the supposed heart rate of 97 that my garmin tells me is true....

Next time I'll try what difference it makes if I choose 'running' as my activity

  • I also get too low readings from cross country skiing.

  • Noticed the same but last Sunday, I made sure the watch was tighter than usual and well in place over my wrist and got a much better BPM than the previous attempts. Next Sunday, I'll bring my chest strap but only pair it to my phone app so I can compare what the watch and the strap say. I'm expecting the watch to show some latency but that's normal for a wrist based heart beat monitor.

  • Yes, I also expect slightly wrong readings when skiing, since I use my wrists quite a lot in this activity. I have noticed that the cardio app is tuned for high heart rates, while the cross country skiing seems to be tuned for low heart rates, like yoga. That is a bit surprising. With my older Vivoactive HR, I got high heart rates when skiing.

  • So I went for my weekly crosscountry ski activity today and like I said, I paired my chest strap to my phone app (Meerun, disappointed it's no longer being maintained :-( ) and had my watch snug on my wrist, using its built-in HRM sensor.

These are the result (first one is Meerun and second is Connect)

Both seems to follow my heart rate pretty well.
