GPS connection taking forever

I have a brand new Vivoactive 4 that has had it's software updated both by Garmin Express and Garmin Connect.  I am finding that it is taking over 10 minutes to connect to GPS.  I clearly see the red progress bar completing what seems like a search and then it just sits there.

I have tried to change the options to GPS ONLY, GPS plus Galileo and GPS plus GLOSNASS

It doesn't seem to make a difference.

Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Have you synced using Garmin Express on a pc/mac?

When you go to "about" on the watch, if you scroll to the very ends, you should see the "Current CPE info", and it should say it's "current".  That's info GPS uses to speed up getting a lock.

  • Thanks Jim,  Technical support had me check and we verified that I have the latest GPS update 2.70.  The Current CPE info is listed as current.  What exactly is CPE info and is it specific to the watch or to my location.

  • It's used for predictions when looking for satellites, and expires after a week or two.  That's why seeing it's current value as "current" is good.  You could also see "expired" and others if I recall.

  • This is helpful to know and would help explain why it might be slow at first and then improve as the predictive information is updated and made current.  Yes I have synced the watch with two macs.  I don't think it's related, but I have had issues with Garmin Express crashing repeatedly while trying to upload music.  Fortunately this doesn't seem to affect the syncing and other Garmin Express functions.
