Compute personal activity intelligence (PAI) score

This is not specific to the vivoactive 4, but a general suggestion for Garmin's health/lifestyle watches.

Personal activity intelligence (PAI) score is an independent measurement of fitness which has been developed by Norwegian researches. It has proved to be a better indicator of overall health that traditional measurements of physical activity, e.g. individuals with high PAI do not suffer increased mortality risk from prolonged sedentary behavior (more details and links to studies can be found here https://www.paihealth.com/science-of-pai/default.htm).

PAI score would be a great addition to Garmin's health/lifestyle watches and it would help us toward better everyday health. Apple and Fitbit already support PAI and it would be beneficial for Garmin to also support PAI and contribute to standardizing the metrics we use to quantify health outcomes and ensure access to this important health indicator for Garmin's wide user base.

  • Ok so they are doing their own "thing". The problem I have with that is that PAI is based on years and years of scientific study. Who knows how Firstbeat came up with their quite possibly gimmicky "health number". I am not pleased.

  • And now Garmin Connect won't work with the PAI Health app anymore. Going over to fitbit.

  • Wednesday, January 27, 2021 - I also received an e-mail from PAI Health today. To say I was shocked would be an understatement because I just upgraded my Garmin Vivoactive watch from 1st gen to Vivoactive 4 in order to have access to the PAI Health app and data analysis. I’ve had the watch for only a few days and I was looking towards my first full week of using the Vivoactive 4 and PAI to see what my PAI score would be, how disappointing am I in Garmin. I also read a few of the original research papers on PAI and they are very interesting and thus the reason for my buying a new Garmin Vivoactive. With the ample scientific research behind PAI one would think Garmin would be pleased to have such an app being used by its customers.   I urge Garmin to reconsider this recent decision, it does not bode well for long time customers like myself.

  • didi the same...bought a Garmin Venu SQ in order to get the PAI tracking...I am pretty sure that Garmin coudn't care less....we are just not enough using it for them to care...soon they will release new models with the FirstBeat PAS index, they won't release it on older models that could perfectly support it and Garmin will be Garmin...

  • Indeed....explains it all....but unless you buy a brand new Garmin...you won't get that score....they'll keep it for newer models and maybe the fenix line....

  • Just read that Garmin is ending its partnership with pai health on Feb, 10. Too bad. No reason is provided for.

  • I use to have Xiaomi which has a great PAI interface, just got my VA4 and I am terrible disappointed that I can’t get it. To be honest I am thinking to change brands for this simple feature that Garmin doesn’t has.

It is truly helpful and doesn’t seem difficult to develop at least as an additional app.

  • If you use an iPhone you can still integrate Garmin Connect and PAI via Apple Health.

  • Great! I using a Google phone , I wear a Fenix 6 on my left arm and a Mifit band on my right arm just to get my PAI score and stay above 100
