Compute personal activity intelligence (PAI) score

This is not specific to the vivoactive 4, but a general suggestion for Garmin's health/lifestyle watches.

Personal activity intelligence (PAI) score is an independent measurement of fitness which has been developed by Norwegian researches. It has proved to be a better indicator of overall health that traditional measurements of physical activity, e.g. individuals with high PAI do not suffer increased mortality risk from prolonged sedentary behavior (more details and links to studies can be found here https://www.paihealth.com/science-of-pai/default.htm).

PAI score would be a great addition to Garmin's health/lifestyle watches and it would help us toward better everyday health. Apple and Fitbit already support PAI and it would be beneficial for Garmin to also support PAI and contribute to standardizing the metrics we use to quantify health outcomes and ensure access to this important health indicator for Garmin's wide user base.

  • I created an accont just to get Garmin more aware of this post. PAI is super important and should not be ignored. Garmin: Could you please take use of the PAI algorithm and include this in your next watch software update? Read more about PAI in the link Joel submitted, if you have not already heard about it. Your competitors Apple and Fitbit does already include PAI in their watches. Would be great if you could include it too, as I would like to continue use Garmin.

  • I’ve only just gotten my VA4 for Christmas but considered switching to another brand that is compatible with PAI. However, I found a workaround for now that those of you with iPhone might use. The PAI connect app will take HR data from Garmin through the Apple health app. I just installed it and it’s working even though I don’t have an Apple Watch. FYI.

  • Agreed! This would have been great!

  • Thanks for the tip Denise. This is great!

In the course of checking this out I ended up speaking with the developers of PAI, and they indicated that adding native support for Garmin is a high priority. One of the benefits of that vs integration via Apple Health will be high resolution sampling of heart rate. Apparently via Apple Health HR is averaged over 2 minute intervals.

  • That is great news! I actually wondered about that, with Apple Health. I look forward to the update. I hadn't ever heard of the PAI score before but it seems that this might be my easiest way to track (as a non-athlete but trying to get fit person) whether I am actually doing enough to help my cardio fitness. So glad this was brought up!

  • Hi Joel,

here is a watch face that includes a very similar feature to PAI.

    https://apps.garmin.com/de-DE/developer/7d8da96b-3639-4083-89ce-41e404d5bb10/apps

The MagicDust watch face has got a feature that tracks your fitness level over the last 7 days. A fitness level data field gives you the live value over the day to compare your current fitness level to the average of the last week. If the value is positive your fitness increases and a negative value is the opposite.

    Just give it a try!

  • looked at their website and honestly not sure what to make of it. The end result data is a number out of 100. Is that correct?

  • Would love a PAI feature on my Forerunner 245 as well :)
