Bad gps accuracy

Before My vivoactive 4 I had a forerunner 245 which had great gps accuracy. It was spot on when running on a 400m track. The vivoactive is terrible compared to it. Ran 7 laps and it recorded 3km. Have tried both Gallileo and glonass but the track is almost always 10-20m off where I ran.

Anyone else has this problem?

  • With the latest gps update my position is even more off the track. Doesn't matter if I use gps / gps+galileo etc. @Garmin: do you read this thread? It's not acceptable to wear the watch 90deg rotated to get better gps accuracy. Also the gps fix time is unaccepable: more than 1min to get a gps position. Clear sky perfect conditions. I'm thinking of returning the watch, cause it has no sense to use a gps watch with bad gps.

  • After the latest gps update it became even worse. Even though the distance seems correct, the route is so far from acceptable. I ran by the lakeside, around 1 meter from the lake. Look at km 0-1 on the attached picture.Route

  • I have the same feeling that latest update getting worse GPS accuracy, yesterday I ran 2 circles around lake in the same place on path and readings is completely different and next to this pavement... Im very disappointed about my Garmin, for this price is peace of s*it

  • I used to run in the past with a Huawei watch GT which GPS accuracy seemed to be very smooth. I consider 3-5 meters, a pretty acceptable difference for GPS consumer technology. Sometimes, 10-20% I had also bad GPS accuracy but it was understood that it can't be perfect due to lots of factors like location, type of area, etc.

Now that I use my vivoactive 4 almost 5 months, I see that when I cycle, GPS accuracy seems almost always very smooth. When I run, it is a little bit different. Sometimes I have a ~10 meters difference in my position. But most of the times it is also 3-5 meters like my old watch. Even then it is acceptable to me.

I don't believe that there are perfect GPS watches like others mentioned. There is no watch that will record the perfect route on the map if you run under trees or buildings or special location shapes.

Don't forget that all GARMIN series of 2019, use exactly the same hardware and technology. One day test is never enough to judge.

  • Here’s almost the same route recorded with my Garmin Vivoactive 3, which is a lot better. There’s also some “water running”, on the left side, but I suspect that’s because there’s some 6 floor houses just to the left of the left side.

  • same here. inacurate GPS. tracks always to much distance. 3 other Watches / phones come in with the same result but VA4s has like 10% more meters.

AND:  every now and then the watch doesn't find GPS when I start an activity. So I run with like a 1992 Casio Stop watch. CPE is current.

    Annoying

    YES mine is 1km off

  • It also came to my attention today that the GPS is very inaccurate on my VA4s. Ran 20km, but my friend only measured 19.2km, and we ran exactly the same route. Went in on Strava and compared both entries in "flyby" mode and mine was constantly off from the path compared to his (Fenix5) that followed the path. This makes the watch pretty much useless if it differs 5%, especially on long runs.

  • por desgracia es un autentico desastre .

Same problem here, and GLONASS and Gallileo don’t seem to make a difference. The accuracy is worse than on my phone (which was cheaper than the watch!).
