Bad gps accuracy

Before My vivoactive 4 I had a forerunner 245 which had great gps accuracy. It was spot on when running on a 400m track. The vivoactive is terrible compared to it. Ran 7 laps and it recorded 3km. Have tried both Gallileo and glonass but the track is almost always 10-20m off where I ran.

Anyone else has this problem?

  • I don't have any comparison because this is my first garmin and sportwatch, but I'm also little dissapointed with the accuracy. It's not 10-20 meters off, but rather 3-4. The trace itself is rather good, it looks like it shifted over the map. No matter which provider I choose (galileo is the best in my case) it doesn't hit the spot perfectly. Let other speak up too.

  • Without details, there is a site for planning GNSS measurements, www.gnssplanningonline.com
    1) go to the site, mark your location, height, date, do not forget the time zone and set 40 degrees of sky visibility - this is the most for urban building, after that apply the settings.
    2) go to the charts and look at two charts: the number of satellites and DOPs (the lower the DOPs the better, we need a yellow-horizontal for comparison, the red field is understandable, bad constellation), and on the left side click on checkbox, choose the GPS only, GPS and GALILEO, GPS and GLONASS, and compare values of DOPs, obtained with such combinations of GNSS system.

I hope, that the Garmin add GPS+Beidou in the future, becourse for Moscow it will be optimal

For Moscow, for example, optimal will be GPS + Beidou. If I choose only GPS, it will be a poor constellation of satellites and poor accuracy for my location.

  • Thanks for the web tip, good infos. Pretty much confirmed my observations for my location: gps+galileo wins.

  • Forerunner 245:

    Vivoactive 4:

  • 1 sec saving enabled or smart?

  • The it looks like, hopefully, a software problem - again. I believe the both watches have the same gps sensor, the only difference is that va4 has altimeter which lacks on 245, maybe that has something to do with it. Anyway like you said - it's bad...

  • FR 245 is completely plastic, and VA4s have a metal bezel, under which an antenna is installed.

There is a hypothesis that due to the metal bezel there is more interference

  • I am having the same problem when I am biking. The track is sometimes shifted and I go through buildings I don't think it is very accurate. My friend has an Apple watch which performs much better ...
