Information about sleep tracking

Hello,

I have the Vìvoactive 4, and trying to understand the tracking stuff.

The sleep tracking seemed bluff to me, since you had to set the estimates of your sleeping times. So I set my estimated sleeping time to 15:00 - 14:59, so basically 24h.

This worked, and the watch seemed to notice and tracked my night's sleep automatically.

However, it did not detect when I took a nap for an hour during the day.

Does anyone know what algorithms is Garmin using in detecting the different sleep patternds during the different stages of sleep?

Garmin really does not provide a lot of references to studies that have probably been read when developing the tracking features. I used a Huawei watch for a while prior to changing to Garmin, and it provided nice info about how the trackings were done. It would be nice, just out of curiosity, to understand these more in depth.

Best regards

  • Garmin devices don't detect naps.  You want to set your sleep an wake times close to what they really are.  All sleep analysis is actually done of the servers and not the watch.

    Hi,
How do you know this? Do you know about the used algorithms? I read that some devices (other than Garmin) are using Hilbert-Huang transformation in the process. That's not the whole story, but it's nice to know what is done in the estimations.
Could you point me to the documentation?
I'd like to know more about the process.
    Best regards

  • I've been using Garmins since sleep tracking came out.  On the fenix3, as one time it was something you started/stopped on the watch itself, but following that, it moved to server based.

That's why you don't see a widget for sleep on the watch itself. The processing is done on the server, were you can also adjust sleep/wake times and get the data for that vs your defaults.
