Battery drain due to bluetooth connectivity issue?

The following is my experience with the VA4 after having received it directly from garmin.com on 10/19.

Background: On the afternoon of 10/19, I proceeded to setup the watch and updated the firmware to 3.50 based on issues saw in other threads.  After 3.50 installed, I charged the watch to 100% and took it off the charge around 11pm and wore it to sleep.

Setup:

  • Pixel 2 XL with Android 10
  • 3.50 firmware
  • constant HR ON
  • Irregular HR tracking ON
  • Stress alert ON
  • 30% backlight, raised to wake sensitivity set to low
  • pulse ox OFF
  • WiFi OFF

History of what happened:

  • 10/19 - took watch off charger at 100% and wore it to sleep
  • 10/20 - used 30min of GPS for run/walk
  • 10/21 - used another 30min GPS for workout, at this time based on usage, i'm tracking to 5 full days of use with 20% battery use per day
  • 10/22 - another 30min GPS run/walk
  • 10/23 - another 30min GPS run/walk
  • 10/24 - watch crashed mid-day while multiple SMS was coming through while I was trying to swipe one of the messages.  Only way was to force reset of the watch by holding down top right button for 15 sec.  At night, charged the watch to 100% again and wore to sleep.
  • 10/25 - woke up at 7am with 66% battery (WTF?).  later in the day, plugged watch back to the charger while restarting the watch (power off then on).  At the same time I double checked to see if any of the previous settings were changed but that wasn't the case.  Took the watch off charger around 10:30am at 100% but this time I enabled phone connection notification.

Shortly after removing watch off charger at 100%, I noticed constant notification on the watch of phone disconnecting and reconnecting and at the same time, battery was drain quite rapidly having lost 5% in a matter of 1 hour.  I am wondering if this constant bluetooth connect/reconnecting is the cause of the battery drain.  Anyone else also experiencing similar issues?

  • I had the same issue the first day. Charged the watch, went to the car and battery was rapidly dropping. About 5% in half hour. Also noticed constant connecting/disconnecting issue. Came back, tried to update FW (it was 2.7) and couldn't from the phone (due disconnecting). Managed to connect to wifi, updated and then connection/disconnection issue was gone. Charged again and after four days battery dropped to 19%.

However, HRM was constantly on even not wearing the watch or charging it. Did factory reset last evening, paired again with the phone (remember to delete watch under Bluetooth), charged to 100%. After 1 day and one short hiking of 50 min, battery is currently 85%

Thanks. After my post I did a couple power on/off sequence as the step counter stopped tracking for some reason. At the moment, things appears to be back to normal. Power drain and all sensors appear to be working. I will continue to monitor and hope no more issues. This is the challenge of being an early adopted. We are all beta testers and I hope Garmin eventually release a firmware that's stable all around.
