Active calories too low?

After a short trip to polar I recently got the vivoactive 4S. Before polar I've had the vivoactive 3. I normaly had an average of 450-550 active calories a day.
Now with the new 4s I have 87 active calories as an average, with not moving any less than before.
What's the problem here and does anyone else has experienced similar things?

  • I'm experiencing the same with the Vivoactive 4, maybe is related with the HR (forums.garmin.com/.../heart-rate-too-low) or they are using a different calculation method

  • yes that's definitely possible, when I look at my heart rate it was definitely off at some times... let's hope Garmin brings an update for that

  • so after a few more days it's absolutly clear to me that heart rate is way too low. I have been comparing some walks with the heart rate strap on and it's way off when just measuring on the wrist.
Would love to hear something about the issue from garmin

    Hi

I've just brought a vioactive 4 and really disappointed! I've logged a walk today and total calorie burn is 2000, whilst my garmin forerunner says 3000. I wore them both.

That's a huge difference!  I'm unfit and really struggled up a hill and it didnt register above 140hr which I was definately out of breath.

Really frustrating as i thought i was doing a upgrade to a better one.

    Have emailed garmin about this.

    Becky.

  • Hi, please verify your max heart rate and weight in the user profile on both devices (default hr zones). Also the activity class/level may affect energy estimation. Lastly each device must have the same heart rate data. Use active calories (calorie widget) as a guide for energy intake.

The calorie difference between the devices is 1.5 (3000/2000). I dont know the equations that Firstbeat uses for calculating calories. But I'll guess the calorie discrepancy is probably casued by the combined effect of a higher max weight (up to vivoactive weight * 1.5) on the forerunner and/or lower max hr ( down to vivoactive weight * 0.67)  in the user profile of the forerunner.

    EDIT:

Just to verify calorie estimation I simulated sending heartrate 165 to an old forerunner 910XT and vivoactive 4 using the SIMULANT+ tool:

    Userprofile-settings : weight 67 kg, max hr 177

    Results:

    Forerunner 910XT: 13 calories/min

    Vivoacitve 4  :         13 calories/min

    Conculsion:

It seems like the calorie estimation is the same on both devices
