Is the sleep tracking really that bad on Garmin Venu?

Hi there,

I'm not the Venu owner yet but I'm close to buying one as my 3 years old Fitbit Ionic is slowly giving up and the new Versa is just not my style at all.
I love the look of Venu and I know it's probably one of the best fitness trackers out there. I workout 5-6 times a week. Weight lifting, HIIT, jogging - whatever I feel like on a certain day. I'm sure Venu would do an amazing job tracking all of my workouts and daily calories. However I've managed to find out that the actual sleep tracking on the Garmin devices is basically next to useless. Is that really the case? I mean, I'm a shift worker and I often go to bed at different times. Sometimes I will read a book for an hour before bed. Sometimes I'll just play a game on my phone for 30min before sleep. It's all just super random. My Fitbit had absolutely zero problems detecting my sleep, like zero zero problems. It's all always very accurate (as much as it can be on a wrist device) and it always knows exactly when I fell asleep and woke up. It detects my naps if I ever have one during the day. It's really good. I'm wondering if Venu will be anywhere near as good.
I like the Body Battery function on the Garmin devices but then again if sleep tracking is that bad how can the body battery be accurate?

I would really like to know if it's really as bad as some people say?

Thank you.

  • Chill down, guys.Grin

I'm not sure if you have noticed, but I was being sarcastic!!

Of course I totally disagree this Garmin policy!!

Just read some other posts I have sent before!!

I'm complaining about how Garmin deal with their customers since I had VA3, that was completely buggy, not only software, but also hardware (location of barometric entrance).

So, I'm not the enemy. I also want moderators of this forum really bring our angry to Garmin staff.

What I do is not recommend Garmin to my friends, since it is becoming equal to Samsung, launching plenty of new devices and forgetting post selling policy.

    Cheers

That's good to know, but as science estimated it's really hard to understand when person is joking especially in text :)

And since I didn't read these forums for a while I thought that you can be serious about buying a new watch and tried to answer accordingly.

can't argue with you here, and I can't see how to change their behavior. Of course not advertising to friends can lower their revenue but I doubt it would be enough.

I think that Chinese brands is our best ally in this, because they bringing a lot of interesting and versatile devices for a fraction of a cost. And they actually do add features to old devices so does Fitbit by bringing SpO2 and considering adding pressure measurements to their wearables. (Oh I wish that Garmin could come up with something like that... )

Bruh sleep tracking is virtually non existent. It's almost like completely random statistics. My $20 Mi Band used to provide more reliable statistics about sleep.

  • You are correct. Sometimes I really forget that writing is totally different than chatting face to face!!

But I don't think Garmin will change deeply. They now add some, how could I describe, more active moderators that sometimes interact with us, but nothing beyond this.

So, really consider getting Chinese like devices, if you get access to it.

Here, in Brazil, only importing. It is not easy to find the new stuffs in common shops.

  • I hope that those Garmin's move aren't limited to moderators only and they would bring more features or rather bug fixes, after all they own Firstbit now and can improve their sleeping algos. As for Chinese watches I already have Huawei and Amazfit so using the latter for my sleep tracking to correct my Garmin stats Stuck out tongue

  • My experience is exactly the same. Fitbit is accurate, while Garmin seems to make up data.

Garmin really needs to fix the completely inaccurate Sleep function on the Venu.

  • Hello. I have raised this topic more than once. I think after Garmin showed an improved version of the Firstbeat algorithms on the new Venu 2 watch, for goodness nobody will get it on the first generation Venu. The only chance is a group lawsuit not tens and not hundreds but tens of thousands of users. But how many people should be collected and motivated to act? They are definitely missing in this forum. Any ideas? Facebook? Twitter? Other forums?

  • I've seen a big community at Reddit but I have a feeling that most of people who are there are present in here as well. So social media is the best bet probably. Even making that public could possibly motivate Garmin to act on this issue. Someone had mentioned earlier that more they are going to ask reviewers on Youtube to highlight that sleep tracking isn't that good on Garmin, and I think it could change things too.

  • There is a good review of the Venu 2 on Android Authority and it specifically addresses the sleep tracking, and it notes that it is much improved compared to the Venu 1, but still not as good as Fitbit.

  • I own both Venu and Venu 2.

I had good results now with the Venu 2 and it's nice to have the widget directly on the watch and a rating of your sleep but: Yesterday I went to bed at 1:30 but the watch thinks I fell asleep 11:30 when in fact I was still awake watching TV.
I think my heart rate is in general pretty low so that  makes it harder for the watch to detect it. But when I stand up, brush my teeth etc. it should clearly notice that but it does not.
